50 °F / 10 °C is very cold, yes. Yesterday it was around 15 °C.Travis B. wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 12:12 pmThey have cold in Australia outside the Snowy Mountains?bradrn wrote: ↑Wed May 28, 2025 10:38 pmCould we exchange your heat for our cold please?Herra Ratatoskr wrote: ↑Wed May 28, 2025 3:29 pm
Finally had a guy come out and look at it. The compressor is shot, could take days to get it fixed up. Hopefully before Saturday, as the heat will be really kicking in then...![]()
(I know someone in Australia and his idea of a cold winter day is 50's F... which here in the middle of the winter would be downright pleasant...)
OK, characterising that sort of freezing cold temperature as ‘record-breakingly hot’ is not reassuring at all for my prospective move there…

Re: Venting thread
Firstly, that was cherrypicked and exaggerated: it is only February for which the 50s F¹ would break a record, and only barely² – it just that we have for some reason had fewer heatwaves in February than other months, so that 15°C¹ just breaks the record for the month.
Secondly literally every building here has been built to keep the heat in, to the point where an outside temperature even slightly above the comfort point can be tricky, and we have warm coats and clothes and blankets, and not so that we can scorn them for going out in a T-Shirt and shorts as the superhumanly cold tolerant beings we are.
¹ I was going on 10-15°C being in the 50s F, given I don't speak Farenheit
² The February record is 14.something

Yes, I’m aware. Here the converse applies, which is why 15 °C feels so cold.Lērisama wrote: ↑Fri May 30, 2025 7:30 am Secondly literally every building here has been built to keep the heat in, to the point where an outside temperature even slightly above the comfort point can be tricky, and we have warm coats and clothes and blankets, and not so that we can scorn them for going out in a T-Shirt and shorts as the superhumanly cold tolerant beings we are.

Re: Venting thread
The thing to remember about places like here in Wisconsin in the winter is that buildings are designed to keep you warm and everyone dresses warmly. When you're indoors you'll hardly notice the temperature outside, and when you're outdoors you'll (hopefully) be dressed for it, which will make it not so bad. And anyways, when you're wearing a winter coat on top of multiple layers the 50's will feel warm.

As they say, "no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing".
Re: Venting thread
I beg to differ -- you do realize just how hot it gets in AU in the summer, right? You can dress away excessive cold, but beyond a certain point you can't dress away excessive heat.

Re: Venting thread
I would imagine that temperatures of -20 °C would feel pretty miserable no matter how much you’re wearing…

Re: Venting thread
I think the coldest I've experienced is like -15 centigrade in prague, and my breath was outright condensing into ice in my facial hair. ice. on my beard. from my own breath. I'm sure it's possible to be dressed warmly enough to be comfortable in such a climate, but even so you're... breathing in the cold air, and carrying a lot of textile on your body.
like, I agree with the general sentiment of "cold you just get more dressed for, so it's not such a big deal" but this is within, I don't know, the temperatures where water is liquid.

Re: Venting thread
On the topic of temperature, I recently experienced 0 degrees (celsius) for the first time in a few years in Australia. It has never been this cold in Adelaide (the record low is 1/2 a degree) but it gets significantly colder in the hills.

Re: Venting thread
I've gotten close to -40 degrees but that was in Alaska and was not comfortable. -10F with the right layers is actually pretty ok and anything between about 10F to freezing was actually fine with a t shirt and maybe a light jacket as long as I wasn't going far and keeping active. Back in the lower 48 though "comfortable" has become about 50F to 75F so I guess it really is whatever you become accustomed to. Over 75F is still Bad without some way to cool down though.
Today is supposed to be just below the record for this day of the year in my area and will be in the high 80s. I'm going to run a cold bath and take a dip whenever I overheat, I think.

You've still a bit of research to do, I see

Re: Venting thread
-40 is extremely cold in any temperature scale. okay, only celsius and farenheit: in kelvin it'd be quite eldritch

Re: Venting thread
Ironically, not in Anders Celsius's original scale, which was backwards: 0 was boiling, 100 was freezing. So -40 would have been what is now 140 °C.
