Verduroman — Lexicon
Companion to the Verduroman grammar. Entries are Verduroman headwords, sorted by the Verduroman alphabet (a ä b c č d ð e ë f g h i î k l m n o ö p r ř s š t u ü v y z ž; accented vowels sort with their base). The Latin source follows each gloss in guillemets.
Latin y transcribes Greek upsilon and gives ü, which is the vowel's main lexical source: lüra, butürom, dažül, tümpanom, amüdala.
Latin's initial h is silent but survives in the spelling, as in French homme and hier: hömo, hyeri. It is invisible to every sound change and is restored afterwards, so it never affects a derivation.
The nominative singular is often a bare stem and reveals little of the rest of the word, so the accusative singular is given wherever it is not simply the nominative plus an ending: pi (acc. pëðem) 'foot', hömo (acc. hömnem) 'man', reč (acc. režem) 'king'. A quarter of the entries need it. Where the nominative is regular it is omitted.
Conventions follow the grammar. Nouns are cited in the nominative singular, verbs in the infinitive, adjectives in the masculine nominative singular. Second-declension nouns and adjectives, the third-declension neuters and the dative plural are all fed in with the archaic Latin ending -os, so a source given as bonos is Classical bonus. Latin x is otherwise cited normally, though the pipeline reads it as cs: the rule file reserves the letter x for the velar fricative.
Where a Latin word eroded past usefulness the replacement Romance itself reached for is used instead, and the source shown is the replacement: bucca for ōs, gamba for crūs, ossum for os, auricula for auris, diurnum for diēs, vetulos for vetus, amplos for lātus. Four further substitutions were made to break collisions this language produced that Latin did not: condūcere for dūcere, prīmavēra for vēr, sēmināre for serere, famulos for servos, exsiccāre for siccāre, aerāmen for aes, which had eroded to a single segment, and two Late Latin forms Romance itself reached for in the same positions: aetāticum for aetās, whose accusative had fallen together with that of aestās, and vāsum for vās. Rēs is not kept: it eroded to a single syllable and causa had already taken its ground, as it did in French chose and Spanish cosa.
A second class of erosion is dealt with separately. A handful of nouns and adjectives reduced to a nominative singular short enough to be misheard as a common function word — quiēs as ci beside the relative, lītos as li beside the article, mīles as më beside the possessive, citos as se beside the reflexive. These rebuild the nominative on the accusative, dropping its -m: cëte, lito, mëte, seto, and likewise more, rito, rore, lëto, dote. Pācs joins them for the same reason at one remove: its pač sat on the oblique stem of pater, and 'father' is the weightier word, so 'peace' regularises to pase. Where even that yields nothing longer the word is replaced: incēnsum for thūs, modicos for vīlis, fortia for vīs, scrōfa for sūs, deintrō for intus (which sat too close to iste). Avos and fīlios give way to the affectionate diminutives aviolus and fīliolus — áviolo and fíolo, the forms behind abuelo, aïeul and figliolo. Patruos goes the same way for the same reason: its patru was too close to pater, so 'uncle' is avunculus → avucol, the source of French oncle.
Two homograph pairs are distinguished by the acute, per the grammar's rule that the word carrying more weight in the sentence takes it: séne 'ash' against sene 'without', and nése 'snow' against nese 'unless'. Two pairs are left to stand: amár is both 'to love' and 'bitter', and čer was both 'to rub' and 'thrice' until ter was dropped — Romance lost it too and says tre volte.
The Swadesh list is included. Cultural vocabulary is Roman and Romance rather than Almean: förom is a marketplace, tabërna a shop or tavern, denari a coin, ecleša a church.
