Confusing headlines
Re: Confusing headlines
This one is not at all confusing, but I'd say it's very weird given the subject matter:

Oh, now here’s a classic:
Jay Slater's mum 'accused of his murder by trolls'

Re: Confusing headlines
For starters, when I read this headline here I immediately thought of the high fantasy meaning of 'troll', not the online version, and furthermore I wasn't sure if it was the trolls accusing his mom, or his mom enlisted trolls to murder her son.

Re: Confusing headlines
Personally I would expect one to be more likely to be murdered by trolls in someplace like Norway than Tenerife...

The first ten words of this headline on their own sound like the title of some not-at-all family-friendly entertainment.

Re: Confusing headlines
I would expect trolls to hang out in caverns deep in Scandinavian mountains, not go to the warm beaches of places like Tenerife (and murder people there).

Re: Confusing headlines
Henrik Ibsen certainly thought that the mountains of Norway would be a typical place to find trolls.

My default reading was that the serial killer was the one doing the investigating, rather than “the serial killer striking again instigated the renewed attentions of the police”.For the description of ‘Law & Order’ S6E12 “Trophy”, Hulu wrote:Serial killer reopens cold case.

Re: Confusing headlines
Is this a garden path, or a perfectly regular English expression that I just haven't heard about yet?
From the Irish Times:
Car hits pedestrians in Foxrock after mounting footpath
So the car tried to have sex with a footpath?

Re: Confusing headlines
No, it’s a perfectly normal expression. A vehicle is said to ‘mount’ a footpath or the curb if its wheels go up over the edge of the road.
(More generally, I’d say that the sexual use of ‘mount’ is actually fairly rare. Most of the time it’s just an ordinary verb.)
