This one is not at all confusing, but I'd say it's very weird given the subject matter:

Oh, now here’s a classic:

Jay Slater's mum 'accused of his murder by trolls'

(Both this and last from the BBC. Perhaps they’re trying to usurp The Grauniad?)

For starters, when I read this headline here I immediately thought of the high fantasy meaning of 'troll', not the online version, and furthermore I wasn't sure if it was the trolls accusing his mom, or his mom enlisted trolls to murder her son.

Precisely my thought processes too.

Personally I would expect one to be more likely to be murdered by trolls in someplace like Norway than Tenerife...

The first ten words of this headline on their own sound like the title of some not-at-all family-friendly entertainment.

From the computer security blog Krebs on Security:

I'm still not entirely sure I've parsed it correctly.

I would expect trolls to hang out in caverns deep in Scandinavian mountains, not go to the warm beaches of places like Tenerife (and murder people there).

Henrik Ibsen certainly thought that the mountains of Norway would be a typical place to find trolls.

The humans of Norway might well go on vacation to Tenerife if they have the money and are into sunny beach vacations. So why shouldn't the trolls?

I suppose you could find trolls who are into sunny beach vacations...

For the description of ‘Law & Order’ S6E12 “Trophy”, Hulu wrote:Serial killer reopens cold case.
My default reading was that the serial killer was the one doing the investigating, rather than “the serial killer striking again instigated the renewed attentions of the police”.

Is this a garden path, or a perfectly regular English expression that I just haven't heard about yet?

From the Irish Times:

Car hits pedestrians in Foxrock after mounting footpath

So the car tried to have sex with a footpath?

No, it’s a perfectly normal expression. A vehicle is said to ‘mount’ a footpath or the curb if its wheels go up over the edge of the road.

(More generally, I’d say that the sexual use of ‘mount’ is actually fairly rare. Most of the time it’s just an ordinary verb.)

One thing that comes to mind is mounting a filesystem.
