What is Kassite?

Post by keenir »

Was wondering what material exists about the Kassite language, and I found this in the forum here, and was wondering if anything had been found since then.
And evidence points to the Indo-Iranian superstrate of the Mitanni being Indo-Aryan rather than Iranian, fascinatingly. (The Hurrian mainstay of the Mitanni had already been in the region for quite some time, of course. Some linguists suggest that the Kassites who plagued the Sumerians may have been cousins of the Hurro-Urartians, but attestations of Kassite are so limited that I imagine that would be hard to prove.)

I imagine most material would be in the form of names, rendered in Aramaic and-or Sumerian -- the script of the scribes. It'd be a good starting point, at least, yes?

thank you

I assume you've looked at Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Iranica?

These summarize the evidence-- basically a few hundred words, with no texts in Kassite itself. I'd be very wary of claims of family membership.

(I think you mean Akkadian btw. Aramaic was not yet spoken in Babylonia in Kassite times.)

I knew a woman named Kassite' once, but she spoke some Indo-European thing -- probably not of interest.

PS: The book I was reading today, by Karen Armstrong, mentioned that the Kassites came from the Caucuses(sp)

But all that tells me is that their language isn't related to Basque. :D
(tis a joke)

No, not likely. They're usually considered to have come from the Zagros, that is, the mountains just to the east of Mesopotamia.

It was just an inventive spelling of "Cassidy", and I was trying to be cleverer than I should've.

Kassite is an ore of the rare elements which phonemes are made of.
Self-referential signatures are for people too boring to come up with more interesting alternatives.

Or..... is it? Time to start work on the great Proto-Caucuso-Basque theory.
