Branching Word Evolution Game

Post by foxcatdog »

Word evolution game but it branches. Make sure to create multiple branches on the first go. Please keep it to one change per post.

['ja.ma na 'o.mi]
jama na oumi
"Salmon of the Sea"

I'm bored and sick, so I might give this a try:
Common developments:
  • Fortition of /j/
  • Open-syllable lengthening
  • Umlaut ("i-affectation"), resulting in a series of front rounded vowels
Northern (the prestige variety)
Unique developments:
  • Initial /j/ fortites to /d͡ʑ/
  • /aː/ (from OSL) > /æː/ next to palatals, /ɒː/ next to labials; where both occur, there is variation
  • Frication of voiced stops (a notable shibboleth)
  • Weakening of unstressed vowels to /ə/
  • Semantic development to "adult salmon" and incipient univerbation (though the compound is still reasonably transparent
Reflex:
['d͡ʑæː.β̃ənəˌeː.β̃ə]
džäme ne eme
"adult salmon"
(sometimes informally ['d͡ʑæːβ̃ə.ni.β̃ə] džämenime, though this variant is recessive and stigmatised)

Western
Unique developments:
  • Initial /j/ fortites to /d/
  • Long vowels resulting from OSL become falling diphthongs, but /a/ fails to lengthen
  • Loss of unstressed high vowels; the remaining unstressed vowels are subphonemically centralised
Reflex:
['d̥ɐmɜ nɜ '(w)ʏœ̯m]
dama na üöm
"salmon of the sea"

Eastern
Unique developments:
  • Initial /j/ fortites to /z/
  • /a/ is rounded before nasals
  • Nasals dissimilate to voiced consonants when the following consonant is also a nasal
  • Unstressed vowels are slightly centralised, but never lost or weakened
  • As this variety is more conservative, OSL and i-affectation fail to become phonemic
Reflex:
['zɔ̃ːmɐ dɐ 'ɵ̃ːmɪ]
zâma da omi
"salmon of the sea"
