I wonder how likely it will be that this will be panned when it actually hits the screen. People don't want AI-generated content.malloc wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2026 8:09 pm Horrible news on the AI front: AI actor Tilly Norwood set to star in first feature film. Nazis do - question is whether there's enough of them to make a movie succeed.Travis B. wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2026 10:02 pmI wonder how likely it will be that this will be panned when it actually hits the screen. Indeed, political extremists like AIs because those have no conscience and will say and do whatever the extremists want them to. A human actor who doesn't share your ideology will probably refuse to act in your film (unless you offer him so much money that he couldn't resist, but even then, he may refuse); an AI actor won't object on those grounds.Raphael wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2026 2:35 amNazis do - question is whether there's enough of them to make a movie succeed.Travis B. wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2026 10:02 pmI wonder how likely it will be that this will be panned when it actually hits the screen. Ex-Boss Man knows the researcher (and was invited to a symposium hosted by her!), so this is a group that I'm not unfamiliar with. Cool to see that it is bearing fruit, though there's always the question of "what's next"...Raphael wrote: ↑Thu Jul 02, 2026 7:15 am From the Happy Things Thread, years ago:

Well, not fully, but the idea with the review is to look at the progress in replicating the functions of cells. Synthetic protocells have been pretty achievable, but full cells... well, that's Boss Man's ultimate goal, but we're quite far from that point.

Yes, obviously they'll try to make gray goo next.
Thing is, everywhere I look I see largely negative reactions to AI slop. The public at large does not want AI slop. So regardless of the quality or lack thereof of this AI-generated movie content, just the fact that it is openly made with AI is liable to lead to its being panned.Raphael wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2026 2:35 amNazis do - question is whether there's enough of them to make a movie succeed.Travis B. wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2026 10:02 pmI wonder how likely it will be that this will be panned when it actually hits the screen. Thank you for that background information!lëtzeshark wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2026 4:10 am

yeah, but they'll possibly swallow it all the same, with enough marketing.Travis B. wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2026 10:02 pmI wonder how likely it will be that this will be panned when it actually hits the screen. Quite. They have permanently made the world worse, all to save themselves some money. We must stop beating around the bush and acknowledge that this technology directly attacks our quality of life and dignity.Torco wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2026 6:36 pmwhat really creeps me out is the language. there is no tilly norwood to speak of, there is no one starring in that flick. the flick is generated by a model. there is no "AI actor" cause model files aren't actors, they're at most brands.... and okay, sure, actors are already brands, but still. it's like the entire ruling class has decided that convincing people that models, chatbots, etcetera are persons is in their interest. and like... they're probably gonna succeed: it's disturbingly easy to convince humans that non-humans are humans, than not-people are people. no need to even look at religions, hell, even two coins and a twig can look like a person to our eyes. they will probably not need that much marketing
Presumably they'll have to find another line of work, undoubtedly less appealing with lower pay and considerable competition from everyone else losing their jobs to AI.
Blatant regnism!Torco wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2026 6:36 pm what really creeps me out is the language. there is no tilly norwood to speak of, there is no one starring in that flick. the flick is generated by a model. there is no "AI actor" cause model files aren't actors, they're at most brands.... and okay, sure, actors are already brands, but still. it's like the entire ruling class has decided that convincing people that models, chatbots, etcetera are persons is in their interest. and like... they're probably gonna succeed: it's disturbingly easy to convince humans that non-humans are humans, than not-people are people. no need to even look at religions, hell, even two coins and a twig can look like a person to our eyes. they will probably not need that much marketing
I'm not sure I follow you. But I agree that businessmen doing provocative and stupid publicity stunts are nothing new.rotting bones wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2026 12:47 am I'm surprised people don't understand how NORMAL all this is. Flooding the market with inferior products to make a few bucks here and there, thereby throwing workers under the bus. The capitalist plan is to deskill the alternatives to make themselves indispensable. This strategy has worked for them in the past. (I don't know whether it will work this time, though I have been posting my speculations for years.)Ares Land wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2026 2:09 amI'm not sure I follow you. I'm extremely dubious about the results.
*chuckle*WeepingElf wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2026 3:13 am One thing LLMs can't do is humor. I recently found a nice German example. There is this little joke:
Treffen sich zwei Jäger im Wald. Beide tot.
'Two huntsmen meet/hit each other in the forest. Both dead.'
This works because of the dual meaning of treffen. An LLM asked to reproduce this joke produced:
Begegnen sich zwei Jäger im Wald. Beide tot.
This version doesn't work because begegnen can only mean 'to meet', not 'to hit'. There is nothing funny about this.
