Despite years of careful brushing and flossing, one of my teeth has developed a horrible infection with the gums becoming swollen and tender. The best case scenario is an agonizing and expensive root canal.

Owwww. That sounds awful. My sympathies.

Best of luck with the tooth. They might want you to go on antibiotics before trying a root canal, but it probably should be removed eventually if it's that bad. Hubby was prone to tooth infections before he just got his dentures.

My sympathies, too. The root canals I've had weren't that bad, IMO, but then again, I'm under a different health insurance system than you.

This time at least, you can't blame it on carelessness since I have been meticulous about dental hygiene for years. Nonetheless I have no idea how I will even afford a root canal, let alone oral surgery. My wages have actually fallen over the past year because my workplace changed how hours are calculated to save money and inflation has greatly increased my expenses, especially with gas soaring.

It's very unpleasant. and you have my sympathies. It might be easier and cheaper to just get the tooth removed, although I have no idea how health insurance pln.

OTOH, the highest I've ever been in a dentist's chair¹ was when getting root canal surgery, but that tooth had to be removed eventually.

¹In the psychological sense, not the physical one. As far as I can remember almost all the dentist's chairs I've sat in were on the ground floor.

What's this thing with Anglophones always talking about getting high during dentistry? I never got a stronger reaction than my mouth turning numb from anything I got at the dentist's.

Many dentists give the patient laughing gas (nitrous oxide) to help them relax. Speaking of getting high though, one silver lining of this current crisis is that I might get prescribed vicodin for post-surgery pain.

When I had my root canal, they shot me with Novocaine eight times and it still didn’t do anything to dull the pain. It appears a family trait from my father’s side is having extra nerves in the pulps of our teeth.

It must be the interdentals in English. Rare cross-linguistically, so they must provide some advantage to those that do use them…

Well now I must figure out how to find thousands of dollars in my incredibly tight budget. That will require some major cuts for the foreseeable future, certainly all the luxuries I still have. That also assumes they can even save the tooth at all, which seems quite optimistic.

From the "truth stranger than fiction" department, by way of theIrish Times:

Swedish man killed in Limerick crash was on his way to carry out contract killing

Gardaí [Irish cops] believe two Swedish men were on their way to carry out a feud-related murder in the Munster region when they went the wrong way in their car and caused a fatal crash as they attempted to turn around.

I don't know if the root canal qualifies as "interdental". Inter-radical, possibly; maybe even something "fossal"?

More like inter-debt (pronounced non-rhotically) in my case.

But really. I don't like it that the firehose of falsehood is demonstrated live in this forum.
