Congratulations! Well done for doing that – it wasn't the easiest torch to start with.

First very rough ideas for a script for Eŋes:

On the left I have the original Wēchizaŋkəŋ form, followed by its form as used in Eŋes and the word and/or syllable it denotes. At the bottom I wrote a simple example sentence in it. (For which I just noticed the last character is misaligned, whoops…) The whole thing is quite rough because I was having trouble with my pen (also shown), but it should suffice to give the general idea.

Thanks! Needs a great deal of refinement, though…

excellent work. if i may ask, is that a regular #2 pencil, or charcoal pencil?

and its neat to see what changes between the two forms and how they're writ.

Forthed. Even if it does need refinement, it already has a lovely distinct character to it.

It’s neither! It’s a pen I made myself out of a piece of bamboo. It’s remarkably pleasant to use — these days I use it for all of my calligraphy.

Cool. It definitely adds an authentic touch to your calligraphy. Most concultures aren't using ballpoint pens after all.

Absolutely, yes! My belief is that the form of a writing system is strongly affected by its medium, so it always annoys me when I see a conscript which was obviously designed using a ballpoint pen (or any round-nibbed pen, really).

On which note, I’d strongly encourage people here to try making their own if they want to explore this style of calligraphy. It’s not hard at all — in fact you can find videos online explaining how to do it.

my bad; been looking at some #2-esque and charcoal pencils with varying degrees of "this wood looks more natural", lately.

very cool.

after my vacation, I may try my hand at that.

I think I’m improving. Here’s the sample sentence again, to give a slightly better impression of what I want this to look like:

(The squares on the left are to give a scale relative to the nib width. I’m going to say that these characters should be about 4.5 nib widths high, though you can see that I drift a bit — the last couple are taller than they should be, which distorts the shape.)

What are you using the ink? A modern manufactured ink, or homemade (traditional, but corrosive) iron gall ink?

Not a clue. It’s a small plastic container of black watery stuff which, as I recall, I diluted after pouring out of a bottle which had been sitting unused in an old calligraphy set for years. So, I doubt it’s iron gall, but beyond that I haven’t the foggiest.

(That said, I’ve previously gotten good results with ink designed for fountain pens, as well.)

That's really pretty! I see that you end strokes in one of three different ways, a hook to the left, a hook to the right or just turning slightly to the right.

Well observed! But I’m sorry to say that the actual graphic forms got a bit messed up there. If I had done that image a bit more carefully, it should have been clearer that ‘hook left’ was meant to be ‘turn slightly to the bottom’, and that ‘hook right’ is just a variant of ‘turn slightly to the right’. (This should be much clearer in the second image I posted.)

I need to at some point; I've had… less than satisfactory results with store-bought bamboo pens, though I suspect that's most due to user ineptitude.

I have a writing system written in a cursive calligraphic style, but I never much considered the conworld history and mechanism of the writing tools and materials used to write it.

I never used a real pen (no money), all I have is inkscape, but it's an inferior simulator.
