Bit ridiculous imho (not that I'm much less ridiculous for bringing this up, but it just irks me); a fine instance of the (esp. right-wing) American predilection of calling anyone you don't like "communist" or "fascist".

Note the pattern in e.g. occasionally (usually [əˈkʰæi̯ʒnəl̴ɪi̯], but sometimes [əˈkʰæi̯ʒə̃nl̴ɪi̯]; emphatic [əˈkʰæi̯ʒəə̃nəl̴ɪi̯]).

BrE - I would pronounce biopic with stress on the penult, and the LOT vowel [ɒ], probably by analogy with topic

nail clipper [ˈneɯ̯ˌkʰʟ̞ɘpʁ̩(ː)]~[ˈneɯ̯ˌkʰɰɘpʁ̩(ː)]
its/it's [ɘʔts]
heart [hʌʁʔ] or, before a vowel, [hʌʁɾ] or [hʌʁ]

Hmm, not quite a merger I'd say - nail is varying between [nɛjʟ] and [nɛːʟ], but Nell is [nɛʟ]

Perhaps it's closer to [ˈnɛːʟklɪpʰə]

Lancaster
Manchester

I'm trying to work out whether I say the names of Lancaster, UK and Lancaster, PA differently, but I think they're both /ˈlæŋkəstər/ for me. I have such a contrast for Manchester: the UK city is /ˈmæntʃɪstər/ whereas the St Louis suburb is /ˈmæntʃɛstər/.

That's curious, as I live about thirty miles from the UK city and pronounce it with /ɛ/. (Similarly I have /a/ in the second syllable of Lancaster.)

Buses in Chicago have recorded announcements. Yesterday we were coming up on Elmdale and I noticed that the first vowel was so lowered it sounded like [æ]. Perhaps that's the velarisation effect of the [ɫ]? (Despite the fact that Chicago has a huge local theatre scene, the voice actor they hired is from Milwaukee.)

/ɛl/ for me is [ɜɤ̯]; I can see lowering the starting point to [ɐɤ̯], but fronting it to [æɤ̯] seems just wrong to me.

I'd expect velarization to lead to [ɐ̝ˤ] or so -- I've heard [twɐ̝ˤv] for 'twelve', at least, but never lowering without backing

There are Inland North dialects which not only centralize /ɛ/ but also lower it to [ɐ].
