Re: War in the Middle East, again

[…] many explicitly tie the violence there to violence being perpetuated elsewhere (e.g. "From Palestine to the Philippines, Stop the US War Machine!", "From Gaza, to Congo, to Sudan, to Kashmir, to Haiti, to Tigray, NONE of us are free till we're ALL free.") This is quite inter...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

It's hard not to take these arguments as disingenuous when Israel and Palestine are so much more obviously connected to the rest of the developed world than whatever failed state is tearing itself to shreds this week. Why Israel? Because my government just voted to spend $26 billion of my tax dolla...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

I have noticed that at least here /l/-coloring manifests itself in part as blocking vowel fronting, as seen below: too : [ˈtʲʷʰy(ː)] tool : [ˈtʲʷʰu(ː)ʊ̯] toe : [ˈtʰɵ̞(ː)] toll : [ˈtʰo̞(ː)ʊ̯] I have this too (though obviously the precise phonetics are different). But I tend to interpret it as, not b...

Re: Do you think it will ever be possible to go back in time?

Maybe time travel is more like going by train. You have to build tracks and stations before you can go somewhere. This could mean that you cannot travel to a point in time where time travel was not invented yet. Et voila, no time travel to our present. This is precisely what our current theories pr...

Re: "Experiencer"

Well, natural languages are nothing more than conlangs reworked by a very large number of fans, This is not true I rarely ever agree with xxx, but they have a point there. Natural languages were created by human beings, after all, so you could interpret them as a form of collaborative conlangs. I t...

Re: "Experiencer"

I think you all have missed the main reason congrammars are written in plain terms. The conlanger is trying to communicate, while the linguist is trying to prove to their employer that they are on the cutting edge of their field. I think this is overly cynical. I’ve seen plenty of academics who jus...

Another phonetic rule On the other hand, processes like nasal assimilation (on which I’ll say more later) do apply across the boundary. I just realised I completely forgot to mention nasal assimilation in my last post on phonetic rules . So let’s fix that before it’s too late… Anyway, there’s not m...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

Thats why I said spoken human languages. :) In that case, it’s just a tautology… Tautologies are facts, right? (i'm serious - I asked a few times over the course of my life, and nobody wanted to give me an answer) Well, this is ultimately a question of definition, hence a somewhat useless question....

...If I say spoken human languages involve sound , a statement I make despite not having carefully checked that fact in over twenty years...am I wrong? As it happens, this is wrong: you forgot sign languages. Thats why I said spoken human languages. :) In that case, it’s just a tautology…

Re: War in the Middle East, again

My impression is that the antisemitism and other extremism is mostly pushed top-down from the government; of course it’s hard to avoid picking up antisemitic beliefs in that environment, but at the same time people are able to recognise government propaganda for what it is. I suspect that, while ma...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

I’ve only ever known them under the name ‘Kerguelen’, never ‘Desolation’. As for Iran: I have also heard that, compared to the rest of the Islamic world, it has less antisemitism. But ‘less’ is a relative word; I don’t think the Jews there are having a particularly great time of it. Of course, emigr...

I’ve been thinking about revisiting Wēchizaŋkəŋ , once I’ve gotten Eŋes where I want it (and I do actually have a definite plan for it, so keep on reading!). I’ve always liked the aesthetic, and rereading the grammar, there’s definitely interesting stuff in there I’d like to explore further. The maj...

I was linked to this impressively accessible grammar of West Greenlandic: https://oqa.dk/assets/aitwg2ED.pdf . It’s a little eccentric in its presentation, but then again West Greenlandic is a little eccentric too, so it works well. From just reading the first few pages this seems much more "f...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

I think I may have been unclear in some parts. To address your points in turn: 1) "Israel is no worse than Sudan or Burma" is not a great argument. Maybe Israel should try to be better than some of the worst post-colonial dictatorships in the world. You’re right, but it’s also not the argu...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

I give you that Sudan and Myanmar have not gotten the same level of attention as Israel, and have largely fallen from the public's consciousness (when activism about Darfur was a big thing was some years back, and has largely disappeared), and awareness of Iran has largely centered on the actions o...

(And if you ever do decide to take such an approach, please clarify whether your last post was sarcasm or not. Though it’s an essentially correct argument,...
