Re: War in the Middle East, again
when I hear us-allies saying "targeted strikes" i'm imagining like bombing a wedding with six tons of napalm cause there's a chance a priority target might be there tbh. I remember when I was a kid and everyone was like "the soldier is obsolete, wars will be fought by remote operators...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
I agree that hamas' actions being liberatory is controversial if we apply the concept of liberation in an etic manner (etic, not ethic, as in etic vs. emic), which is why I don't use that term in the analysis: the stated goal of hamas is to make it so the territory currently ruled by israel is inste...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
You think Hamas are freedom fighters, of sorts. I think they're just power-hungry thugs. I don't think either of us is going to convince the other and that's all right. I try not to use terminology that's like this in my analysis, to be honest. I don't think there's any difference between, say, a t...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
I mean... there's plenty to be criticized about the maquis, to be honest. they weren't gallant guerrillas geared solely to silence the SS and no one else, guerrilla war is real dirty. And no, I don't think it holds up to say "Hamas doesn't care about the liberation of palestinians from Israeli ...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
So one can't condemn both the State of Israel (i.e. an apartheid state that is currently engaging in genocide) and Hamas (i.e. a paramilitary gang that probably only killed or kidnapped as many as it did because that's how many it could kill or kidnap), but rather only one or the other? Or is that ...

do as the vikings did and supplement vitamin D with cod. if you start getting ideas about raiding monasteries, consult your GP again.

Re: Settler colonialism in action
But Travis, do you condemn llamas? Umm I do not comprehend this non-sequitur. it is a mocking reference to the way the corporate media manipulate people's minds. there's a genocide, bombing of hospitals full of children, probably a hundred thousand dead by now (the 30k figure stopped updating a lon...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
Aronson's article just seems to me to be an effort to justify Israel's actions at all costs, as so much zionist rhetoric is. for example this line about how "all urban warfare causes civilian casualties". really? all urban warfare entails cutting off water to millions of people? demolishin...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
There's nothing special about that prospect, it's just plain old corruption: a leader or ruling class can be hypercompetent -at making themselves rich, at making his patrons rich, and at keeping the system stable, for example, while at the same time, the government itself remain almost entirely usel...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
but there are leaders of the world, and they are machiavellian. it's good to be skeptical of conspiracy theories and ideas what evil hath borne, but not to the point of ignoring reality.

Re: Settler colonialism in action
yeah, antisemitism isn't a thing in the past: friends I grew up were taught to sing some nursery rhyme about, literally, "the jewish dog" being guilty for this or that, and i'm not 40 yet, and there's an active conspiracy theory in Chile about how israeli army veterans are buying up the wh...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
I'm skeptical of a two state solution, tbh: look at it from, say, Jordan's perpective -or Syria or whatever: as long as you have a nuclear ethnostate right around the corner, and one that supports illegal settlements on your land to boot, peace is simply not a smart choice for you. the one state sol...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
That's broadly true, but it's more complicated than that. Look at the Caribbean: the Spaniards came in, worked the natives to death, replaced them with slaves. In Mexico and Peru, they took over the largest civilizations in the Americas, and couldn't shove the people into reservations; so the nativ...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
I don't think that's a very common usage of the term, tbh. israel has a right to exist kind of means that it should not not exist. like i know these kinds of phrases are not literal always, but still. no I think people mean what they say here, that israel both should and should not not exist, or som...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
I feel as if all people have a right to live where they want, broadly speaking: people with guns may stop us at airports and streets but I don't think that changes what's right, simply what's viable. (i.e. whatever the rights of a person qua such are, they're not dictated by policies of states). But...

Re: Settler colonialism in action
The Soviet Union had to import food from private capitalist countries just to feed their own people, as their economy just couldn't do it by themselves. yes, at times. then again, that's true of almost every other country. the us imports food, do you think that entails capitalism "doesn't work...
