Re: On the name "Jennifer"

Actually, it occurs to me that in the Cornish drama Bewnans Ke, we have the form Gwynnever, but I don't know if that's a native reflex or a borrowing from French Guinevere.

Re: Question for Spanish native speakers

I asked a former colleague who's a native Spanish speaker (from Valencia, so...), and also a teacher of Spanish in the UK. She says that 2 is correct, and that 1 is "wrong". However, I've heard her produce forms like 1 "in the wild" (i.e. something like saldré esta tarde, excepto...

Re: On the name "Jennifer"

To be honest, I'm dubious about the derivation of "Jennifer" from PC * windoseibarā . There are literally no other examples of *w >/dʒ/ in the Cornish corpus, and as far as I'm aware there aren't any attestations of the name before the 18th century. The expected Cornish reflex of a Proto-C...

Re: British Politics Guide

Trying to think up what the Blairite-Brownite-Centrist SDP2 party would name itself is amusing. Even more so when you think of what the inevitable merger with the Lib Dems would call itself.

Re: British Politics Guide

I think we can assume everyone commenting is lefty (liberal or not) unless if they say otherwise, given the political slant of those who generally participate in these discussions :D. I don't think one can legally "undo" the article 50, regardless of a second referendum. (fixed typo artic...

Re: British Politics Guide

I’m intrigued, Sal. What’s your prediction on the likelihood of a second referendum/"People’s Vote" (a term I have not a little distaste for)? Obviously as a lefty-liberal remainer who would rather all this Brexit nonsense just fuck off back to the Tory hell it came from, I’m very much in ...

I honestly have nothing to say here aside from the fact that I really like what you're doing. I'm really digging on this language.

Re: Telpahké: the thread - NP kings and whores

Next post will be the final one on history, bringing us to the present day. After that, I’m open to suggestions: I’m thinking of either a culture description along the lines of Zompist’s "lives of ordinary people" from the Historical Atlas of Arcél, or maybe some language stuff: what woul...

Re: Telpahké: the thread - NP kings and whores

Thanks for all the compliments guys, much appreciated. I wasn’t sure if this kind of thing would be of interest to many people, so it’s reassuring to know that people are reading. Next post will be the final one on history, bringing us to the present day. After that, I’m open to suggestions: I’m thi...

Re: Telpahké: the thread

Interesting. I'm particularly interested in the caste system, since I'm trying to work through how the stratification of society through caste might affect matters. My people, the Vedreki, have had a rather fossilised (reasons for that which I suppose I should explain elsewhere) caste system of fiv...

Telpahké: the thread - NP kings and whores

Decline of Kings and the rise of the Whore: 900 to 1300 Shortly after the new year feast of 923: the king of Ahpɔní on Korhúǝ retires to his personal quarters. His city is in the midst of an outbreak of púǝkay - a highly infectious disease, probably caused by a Shigella-like bacterium, the primary ...

Re: Telpahké: the thread

Empires and "Heroes": 253 to 900 For what it's worth, Telpahké is evolving as I write this, and new words and grammatical constructions are making themselves known as I go along. One of which is an adjective derived from Impár : in this case it's Impɔrín , which I'm going to Romanise as '...

Re: Telpahké: the thread

So, History Part 1: Historical Outline Note on names: I'm not going to be consistent here. I'm going to be using the modern names for the Islands: thus Korhúǝ for Corsoua etc; but for the wider world I'll either be using the standard Tailancan-derived terms I normally use or the native names as I se...

Re: Telpahké: the thread

Nice! Do you have your Dravian stuff back online anywhere or a mirror of some sort? Not yet, although I am looking at new webhosting options. Watch this space. which would imply the exact opposite situation. Which way round is it? Yeah, I'm a dumbass! I'll go back and correct the original post, tha...
