It's called Amalya.

(it's Amal V2, basically, I'm centralizing all my info on it and making some changes)

Re: Star Trek (spoilers are likely)

They made a big deal of Sisko's promotion from Commander to Captain, though, without changing his functional position as the commanding officer of Deep Space 9. Sometimes the writers use these ideas of rank for dramatic effect. Tom Paris gets a multi-episode arc about being demoted and then repromo...

Re: Standard ordering of IPA characters?

I was thinking in general terms, not for a particular language. Unicode order isn't helpful, as WeepingElf points out, since it would be nice to have, for example, <ɛ> after <e> and before <f>. I hold the position that because it is a Latin based system, it should be ordered accordingly.

Re: Star Trek (spoilers are likely)

But I also think the likely organizational model is more like an Antarctic base or an oil rig than like a battleship. From what I've read and heard, that's what Roddenberry's goal was when TOS was being pitched. If you watch the original pilot episode, the Captain has a slightly thicker sleeve band...

Re: Star Trek (spoilers are likely)

But it's not a military base, just a bunch of scientists. Yes, a bunch of scientists, most of whom are government contractors working on contracts managed by the United States Antarctic Program, which, as a part of the National Science Foundation most definitely has a hierarchy in place. That hiera...

Re: The declining quality of our supply of extremely rich people - a rant

I kind of wonder how much inflation there would be if the people who own those $2 trillion Microsoft share would try to spend all that money on actual physical objects (no matter what kinds of actual physical objects). Most of that isn't actually cash, so "spending" it isn't a thing. In t...

Re: Star Trek (spoilers are likely)

I did read one piece of fiction which used the terminology of nobility to express command hierarchy; I think there was a Lord of Astrogation, to give an example. This is very Dune or Star Wars of them, isn't it? Though, I guess SW was kind of a mix, really. I don't think the US Navy ranks need to b...

Re: The declining quality of our supply of extremely rich people - a rant

Disdain and resentment of the billionaires should not be encouraged. Strong disagree. It moves things from the systemic to the personal, and it's not a personal issue. What species of primate do you think we're talking about here? People take things personally...thinking "systemically" is...

Re: The declining quality of our supply of extremely rich people - a rant

Economic theories are flavors of the same dish. Shocking. What's interesting to me is the disdain that the general populous always has for those at the "top," while simultaneously wanting to be them. Pretty indicative of exactly how unsustainable any system is (given enough time). I wish I...

Re: The declining quality of our supply of extremely rich people - a rant

I wonder if feudal lords used enshittification: like the first decade it was all "come to my fiefdom, you'll get land and you can keep *half* of your crop, and the lord keeps the church nice and clean, pretty frescoes in the town, safe roads, good irrigation" and then in the twelfth year ...

I mean, it seems he's won the executive chairmanship, yeah, but until old Ruprup is in the forever Downunder, nothing is truly settled.

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

Does this mean that things are going to get even worse? Probably more so for the Murdochs than the general public. There has been infighting among the older children for decades, both about inheritance and the "direction of the company." This means that Fox - which is their crowning jewel...

Re: Star Trek (spoilers are likely)

While "space navy" may be a trope, I'm curious what you'd replace it with? Given that most of space exploration as occurred as an offshoot of military research and funding IRL, and a majority of astronauts have been recruited from, or had experience in, the military. Also, even if the &quo...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

I think it's more complicated than that. Americans used to be more egalitarian than Europeans. E.g. if you look at the charts in Piketty, France was much more dominated by capital than the US, up to the 1910s, and the top US income tax rates were higher than France's until 1980. Income distribution...
