Re: A guide to writing systems

The most famous example of a nonlinear script is of course Hangeul, used for Korean. How is Hangul not linear? You cannot read a syllable in any way but TBLR. Or are you equating "linear" with only in a ""straight line""? This is indisputably an alphabet, and a very go...

Re: Kala updates etc.

I really dig the aesthetics. Thank you. My artistry is less-than-great, but I try. Are those retconned, or did you start making some new glyphs? They are indeed retconned, but I am also working on a revision that includes making new glyphs. I was reviewing some additions and found some duplicate gl...

Re: A guide to writing systems

Allen makes the case for ζ being zd and it's a good one, but it's a very odd choice (on the part of the Greeks) when there was no symbol for st. I mean, they're Greek, kinda their thing. Seriously though, it speaks to the arbitrary nature of what writing can be used to represent. While we have cate...

Re: A guide to writing systems

Never forget that writing systems are usually not designed by phonologists. People sometimes have the oddest notions of what represents a "sound unit" or whatever worthy of a grapheme of its own. I think that when being taught "to read", many folks just integrate that a certain ...

Re: Kala updates etc.

I like this! Good, I'm glad! This is super cool (like always)! Reverse engineering historical processes is always a blast, and gives one a ton to think about :D It's so good to see you active again. And I completely agree...a lot to think about. And, because I believe in giving the people what they...

Re: A guide to writing systems

tl;dr: I guess what I'm getting at is that if we're trying to come up with some way of classifying writing systems, philology needs to referee. We need to come up with a classification that has implications for how people read and write. Do we though? I understand the impulse, but what might be mor...

If I had ever seen you do this in person, I'd've held you down and called for emergency mental health professionals.

Kinda sounds like you're reinventing Middle Eastern cuisine.
I would have said something closer to South Indian.

Re: Venting thread

started revamping Omyatloko last month and recently found more than a few duplicate glyphs

having to step away from frustration but trying not to just scrap the whole thing

this is revamp number 5

I don't want perfection, but it sure would be cool not to have crap

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

The key issue in all three victories was abortion rights. Repealing Roe , and aggressive anti-abortion laws and prosecutions, are wildly unpopular-- and the abortion rights side is just as fired-up as the anti-abortion side. Gov. Youngkin of VA was on the Fox just after the election on Nov. 7th and...

Re: Venting thread

If I take a day trip to Montréal and speak French there, am I trying to draw attention to how wonderful I feel my French skills to be? 5 years + on the ZBB is not a day trip. xxx appears to have different aims and goals than others on the board with his conlang, and that’s fine. Yeah, I never said ...

No one’s saying that his “…” is a Gallicism. Yeah, I got that. But it falls in line with his assertion that "his English is not so good", doesn't it? Or is that normal for anyone? Who says his aim is for others to find the work interesting? Are you seriously suggesting that him directly i...

My apologies, but my English is pretty poor and I frequently slip in Gallicisms I've studied French. I know French folks. I follow French speakers on multiple platforms. None of them follow every utterance with "...". This type of lazy excuse diminishes any sort of empathy to almost absol...

I am sick and tired of seeing how xxx gets treated on the board. Maybe put everyone on ignore that does something you don't like? Will that improve your experience? I am well aware of xxx’s unorthodox method of engagement on the board…but shouldn’t he be given the benefit of the doubt, especially w...

Third party candidates (in the US) never seem to realize they are messing with the very thing they purport to want to save/fix.

This guy is one of the worst because his antics are painfully obvious as publicity...not unlike several of the GOP ""candidates"".

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

Could someone explain the basic structure of a major US federal government cabinet-level department to me? Well, they're not all exactly analogous to each other, so we'd almost have to go through them one-by-one. I have no idea how each of these ranks compares to each other rank. And that makes fol...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

In all the breathless media coverage of the recent outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas into open warfare, I'm not finding much in the way of analysis. I'm not interested in judgments of the morality of Hamas' actions [...] but in what they are trying to accomplish with them. One possib...
