Re: British Politics Guide

I disagree with Sal's description of the rise of the SNP. Even among hardline SNP voters, a Scotland-England axis is not a priority. The rise of the SNP came about partly due to the fall of other parties, notably the Scottish Socialist Party, after Tommy Sheridan's scandal, and the Lib Dems, after t...

Re: Elections in various countries

From the little I say of the Belgian local elections yet, it seems all three of the European elections yesterday were significant vote gains for the Greens so that's a good thing as far as I am concerned.

Re: Happy things thread!

The conversation about unusual covers with dstring instruments reminds me of two songs I appreciate the originality and musicianship of:

Take Five by Sachal Studios Orchestra (a Pakistani orchestra)
and
Toccata and Fugue by Ulytau (a Kazakh folk metal band)

Re: Dream sharing thread

Me too. Maybe it's because we didn't watch Spongebob as kids? Maybe. I did see a little bit of Spongebob at other people's houses when I was growing up, but I didn't have cable TV for long, so I didn't really get to see it at home. And I didn't even have that; we didn't have cable at all. And, when...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

I quite like the sound change i>iç_# in French. I noticed it about a decade ago, but didn't have any confirmation, so I thought it was maybe me just mishearing things. I don't particularly find the [eɪ] pronunciation agreeable.

Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to? - All languages

I've been listening to a lot of Salil Chowdhury at work. That means lots of Bengali, Hindi, and Malayalam, plus I think two songs each in Gujarati and Tamil and one song each in Oriya and Telugu. I miss my precious Turkish barsongs and Iranian pop(ish) songs. And Afghan and Tajik songs. Thank you f...

Re: Dream sharing thread

I dreamt that I was translating from English into Réunion Creole for my (German) mum. I've also been talking in my sleep often recently, often about food e.g. saying "(i fo mèt ali 73°) it needs to be put on to 73°" or "(Il faut prendre le 8 pour passer à sa sauce) We need to take the...
