As well they should. It's been half a millennium since that word had an /l/ in it.

Re: Happy things thread!

Indian weddings are easy that way. If you're a man going to a Hindu wedding, you wear kurta pyjama . I wore kurta pyjama to a wedding once, but it wasn't Hindu, it was "creative formal" ("wear whatever you want as long as you feel dressed up"). It was so comfy I wish I could wea...

That's how I used to pronounce dauphin , but now I use French pronunciation [dofɛ͂]. Same. I would really need someone else to confirm for me which pronunciation of dolphin I use most often, since both sound "normal" to me. I'm working off the assumption that my initial pronunciation was ...

Really? He has an /l/ there but it's vocalised. I just have [ɑ ~ ɒ].

That's for the afterparty.

The invite says "Classy Casual (plaid apparel encouraged)". Fortunately I have some classy plaid boxers.

I'm going to a gay wedding! You'd think we the rush of marriages following the Supreme Court ruling I'd have been invited before now, but most of my good friends were either confirmed bachelors or as married as they were going to get. So I've only ever been to one same-sex wedding, between a lesbian...

Sorry, I was remembering a time before the latest round of Tory authority when Britain still had public libraries.

If I have a chance, I'll check our library's copy later today.

Re: Choice of contractions in English

Whereas when the negated sentence has imperative force, "not" seems more natural:

"I AM going to the party!"
"You're NOT going to the party and that's final!"

This has got to be a very well-studied area. Have you checked Pullum and Huddleston?

With my colloquial simplification of homoorganic medial clusters, this becomes [twʌni].

I've gotten into my head that I want to read the new biography of Carwyn James in Welsh. But do I really want to pay $10 trans-Atlantic shipping? My last attempt to buy something from a small publisher in Europe was very frustrating.

how do you pronounce plural words that end in /sts/? it's one of the most uncomfortable clusters ever, and i've heard people who flat out don't even say the /ts/. I once had a conversation with a couple of roofers from Chicago who had reanalysed joist to joice in their speech, presumably via a plur...

Continuous in three syllables sounds definitely odd to me.

How do you stress penetrative? I put primary stress on the initial syllable and secondary on the penult but a friend of mine does the opposite.

I'm conflicted about who I want to see win the Republican primary for Governor of Kansas. Both Colyer and Kobach are terrible, but Kobach is worse and would make an even more disastrous Governor than Brownback (which is really saying something). But current polls show him losing to Kelly, the Democr...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

I got teased last night for my pronunciation of "sorcerer" which is [ˈsɑsəɹɚ].

The [ɑ] is due to the traditional lack of the horse-hoarse merger in St Louis. Then r-dissimilation takes place, deleting the first /r/.

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread (Regionalism)

Speaking of regional accents, I recently finished binge-watching TNG, and I have a curiosity about a certain feature of Patrick Stewart's accent. He has a very prominent [æ] vowel in places where even as an American I'd expect [ɑ]. Anyone know if this is part of his native accent (Wikipedia says he...
