Re: The OBJECTS ARE ANIMALS metaphor
In French: chien means "dog", but also "hammer of a firearm".

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.
C++ is certainly a decent choice: it has been used to program many tentpole games, and it's one of the most widely used languages in the software industry. Beware, though, that C++ is kind of a difficult language: it's complex (object-oriented with advanced features like iterators and templates) but...

Cheap idea for a Halloween costume: wear a business casual attire, and claim to be the CEO of a tech company. Now that's scary.

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.
It seems that whenever I overwrite a PNG file in GIMP, the file increases in size even when my edits shift or even remove elements. In the current case, my drawing of an apartment floor plan bloated from 2.7 KB to 16.4 KB simply by flipping one door around. The drawing is set to gray-scale so color...

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.
I've noticed that I haven't really used my laptop during the past few months. For years, I worked as a teacher, so I used a laptop to work both at home and at work, and a desktop computer for videos or gaming. Then I left to get a degree: for several years, my desktop was in my parents' attic, and I...

Re: Random Thread
It is very clear that Tarkin died with the destruction of the Death Star: he specifically refused to evacuate. The camera lingers on him standing in the command room just before the explosion. OFFICER: We've analyzed their attack, sir, and there is a danger. Should I have your ship standing by? TARK...

Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread
I think the thing with /ʒ/ is that English speakers think of it as a "foreign" sound, so they overcorrect by inserting it in foreign words. Another example: I've heard Hajj pronounced as /hɑːʒ/, when the original Arabic pronunciation would be closer to /hædʒ/. There are people who say &qu...

Re: The "work" vowel in Boston, New York and AAVE accents.
On this note, how much has dialect leveling really affected New York English these days? (I don't know, as I've never been there, and the only person I know who's lived anywhere near there is my sister, who lived for a while out on Long Island.) I went there a few years ago. Of course, I'm not a pr...

Re: Random Thread
From Twitter (translated from French).
Apparently the verb γιγνώσκω means "to know", but also in the biblical sense, i.e. to have sex with, so γνῶθι σεαυτόν actually means "go fuck yourself".

Re: Russia invades Ukraine
The "referendums" show 99% supporting annexation in Donetsk and 98% in Lu(h/g)ansk. Wow. It's almost funny how dictators think super-high scores show their legitimacy... even though actual democracies never have this sort of lopsided results, and even 70% of the vote is considered a landsl...

In French it's /vise vɛrsa/, ironically one of the few cases of final -e being pronounced /e/ without an acute accent.

Re: Russia invades Ukraine
Apparently, several regions (Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia) are "holding" referendums on whether or not they want to quit Ukraine and join Russia instead. Or, really, the Russians are holding referendums. Once again, Russia tries to play on Western sensibilities. My take is th...

Re: The "work" vowel in Boston, New York and AAVE accents.
Mel Brooks, for instance, has it: he uses it even in interviews, so I think it's his natural pronunciation. Of course, he's elderly now. [ɜɪ] for NURSE also used to appear in New Orleans, weirdly enough. Other examples of people putting on an accent: Bugs Bunny and Tweety in the old cartoons (their ...
