Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
OK thank you. And offsite someone told me abouyt Turkish, which uses the same verb but has a causative infix, i think -dir-, for the indirect form, as to play something on a device is to make the device play.

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread's Sequel
Theyre the only branches that preserve the aspirates into written history*. It could have been once more widespread, but then survived in only these two branches because in the others it got moot. é.g. Slavic collapses all but one of the aspirated stops with its plain form. in fact it may be that it...

Ha! That's a good one. I should've seen that right away but for some reason I didn't. Yes, it's #3.

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
do any languages have a distinction between "i *played* (an instrument)" vs "i *played* (recorded media)"? like, "i played Carmina Burana" can mean either you have it on CD/mp3/etc or that youre on the piano or whatever. spanish & french seem to also merge these two...

Re: German spelling reform
Macron would fit with the look of some Eastern European languages, or you could use acutes for long stressed vowels and graves for short stressed vowels (and either not mark length when unstressed ,or use third diacritic)

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
I've also used this shift. As above, I go with what feels right rather than looking for natlangs that've done it, but I always think about probabilities. For this shift, it m8ght work best if you have a contrast of voiceless vs aspirated stops, where the plain voiceless series takes on pharyngealiza...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
Also, as a consequence, the language would have severely limited nasal+consonant clusters, with most nasal+voiced plosive at the same POA sequences being found in recent loanwords and only a few in archaic ossified grammatical constructs - does that ever happen with natlangs? I don't follow here. P...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
Finally, how plausible does it sound to have some pervasive and strong diachronic post-nasal fortition and voicing where every nasal + consonant cluster shifts to one of /mb nd nʲdʒ ŋg/ and eventually these clusters are reanalysed as prenasalised consonants, giving rise to a new series? I've used s...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
On a related note, I also have processes of vowel reduction and deletion which occur only in the syllable following the stressed syllable, which I think I recall happening somewhere in Germanic, but I'm not totally sure? I don't know about natlangs but that sounds perfectly reasonable. I've always ...

Dream sharing thread
I dreamed that a new dream thread was here and had at least 2 posts by people other than me .... I dont remember much of what was in them because I thought it was real until earlier today and figured I'd just re-read it when I had a chance. I was most of the old dream thread and probably will be mos...

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any example in biology of a major structure evolving a right-angle. There are some examples ... snails, larvacea, and hermit crabs all have asymmetrical anatomy involving a 90 degree curl of a previously straight segment. However, two of these are aquatic, a...

No pun in this one, just bad writing: Six people in St. Petersburg receive medical treatment after smell of carbon monoxide What's wrong: carbon monoxide is a colorless odorless gas that is slightly less dense than air. Re: Keeping track of sound changes
The lists of sound changes work just fine for me. I have the lists for Poswa, Pabappa, Bābākiam, and Gold all memorized ... so I can do the diachronics in my head. Ive always preferred to write the sound changes out with descriptive words, as in http://www.frathwiki.com/Languages_of_Teppala#Gold_.28...

How about unconditional /g/ > /ʒ/ > /j/? [/quote]Im not sure I believe in an unconditional shift like this. Semitic languages have shifts that are tied to their morphology, and are unlikely to occur in all environments in other languages. This would probably work best if the lanbga\\age has only a ...

Re: Posts from the old board
OK thanks for the update. A few weeks ago I saved the dream thread as a precaution ... on the off chance that even the DB file is corrupt, i could theoreitcally mirror the Dream Thread if anyone wants it. I think mèþru's plan is ideal ... a permanent archive of the board should be readable and easy ...
