Re: River transport in Eretald
Some pictures, to scale, to illustrate what I was imagining: https://teoppeoq.files.wordpress.com/2024/02/so_sesue_sariley_tonnage.jpg?w=2046 https://teoppeoq.files.wordpress.com/2024/02/so_sesue_sariley_pics.jpg?w=2046 Don’t worry, the 2s are suggestions of where to put your tun barrels (or Verduri...

Re: River transport in Eretald
Thanks, hwhatting, I'm grateful for your input. I'm going to offer some remarks; I didn't want to get maybe quite as deep into this as I have, really, and what happens on Almea is for zomp to decide. But one thing I'm taking (respectful) issue with is the idea that 'it will be the same way it is on ...

Re: River transport in Eretald
According to the Almeopedia, in 3479, there were 553,867 registered visitors to Lake Como. That's 46,155 a month, roughly 11,000 a week, obviously more than a thousand people a day. Not all will come by ship, but if, say, 50% of them do, that's still way more than 500 passengers a day alighting at ...

Re: River transport in Eretald
It might be realistic to skip a few months of the year— let's say the fall— because the prevailing winds reverse during that time. Ok. Ships and captains need a bit of time off each year, I guess. You refer to "sailing (tacking)" for the upriver journey, but perhaps this is left over from...

Re: River transport in Eretald
PS. I created more information about this company than I could ever really need... If you're interested, here are the bits of it that are presentable! I'm not sure how realistic it is (another reason for this thread): the economics of it are difficult to imagine. One thing included below is a model ...

Re: River transport in Eretald
zompist may correct me for Verduria, but one other thing to keep in mind is that premodern travel and transport was not nearly as tightly scheduled as we are used to; certainly not on a cargo ship that would take passengers along. You may have had a reasonable expectation plus minus a couple of day...

Re: River transport in Eretald
Thank you for such a useful reply. Good questions. I'm sure you've seen the article on the corona , which notes that sailboats have been used since ancient times. I had in fact missed that! Thanks!! :) I'm no expert on wind systems, but it seems reasonable to me that the prevailing winds come from t...

Re: Almeomusica
Nice! What instrument are you playing in that recording? Thank you so much! I'm playing an odd little travel-handy ukulele-type-thing (there's a picture of it here ). I never played the guitar/uke or anything before this project, so I'm not able to get out my ideas quite as I'd like, but it's a sta...

River transport in Eretald
I've been thinking a lot about river transport in Eretald. I think I've read what's available to read on it; and I have a couple of questions. How is upriver shipping generally powered? (Question can be taken to be relevant to any era, really, before steam.) I think the options are: oars sail - if t...

Re: Modern Verdurian
What happens to the (EMV) colloquial verb accen ‘to scold / tell off’ in the tensed forms? acsnai, acsnei, acsne...? accmai, accmei, accme...? If I am reading it right, the reference grammar suggests these outcomes, but I'm not certain on them. Yeah, that looks right to me too. In MV I think you'd ...

Re: Modern Verdurian
Good to read through this again! I like the parallel text examples and the nuances of the differences between MV and EMV style. It chimed with a wondering I've got, so I'll put it here: What happens to the (EMV) colloquial verb accen ‘to scold / tell off’ in the tensed forms? acsnai, acsnei, acsne.....

Re: Almeomusica
Dhekhnam: Ktuti bikoshil Not what I expected as well - this reminds me a lot of what I've heard of Orthodox Church singing. Sounds great! Thanks! Yeah, that's a good reference point. What did you expect to hear, out of interest, and what surprised you? I'd like to make more Dhekhnami pieces, so I'd...

Re: Almeomusica
Still, it looks like the first physical ones were made in 1891. It's not easy to find pictures of the mechanism, but it looks like the strings are completely even. Would a pianomaker of 1591 be able to make one? Good question, and my instinct says no, and that there'd be no reason to try to optimis...

Re: Neo-Munkhâshi chant
So... this was exploratory, and fun. As this text is not actually attested in-world in Munkhâshi, the only way I can really use it is if there is a group of Gelalhát purists who re-construct Munkhâshi and try to conduct 'authentic' ancient rituals. Or as the opening of a metal concert, or something...

Re: Almeomusica
2. The two keyboards mean that the strings don't get longer regularly, as strings a half-octave apart are juxtaposed. That in turn I think means either 2a. two backing frames rather than one, one for each keyboard 2b. the backing frame is highly complex in shape— not a smooth curve 2c. there are va...

Re: Almeomusica
If by any chance you can throat sing, it would be amazing to incorporate that!! Or if you want to join the faithful of Gelalh and add your voice/sound in any way. Just send me a track and I'll mix it in. :) Things I never imagined anyone saying: "I used to be an Irreanist, but I converted to G...

Sounds great, though perhaps not completely the way I imagined it would. Thanks! And do elaborate This might be weird, but when I read "Munkhâshi chant", I expected something somehow like throat singing. Ah, I see!! If I could do throat singing, I would absolutely have put it on. The idea...

Re: Almeomusica
[snip] The construction might be tricky. It looks to me like the instrument makes would have these problems: 1. The narrow keys imply closely spaced strings in some areas but not others. You could, if you wished, solve this one by offsetting one keyboard by one whole tone, e.g. (K N) I F M S K N E ...

Sounds great, though perhaps not completely the way I imagined it would. Thanks! And do elaborate ‒ I don't repeat this every time I post something as it can get onerous, but I am not presenting anything here without the proviso that it is completely subject to revisal. That's, in fact, a major rea...
