Re: Russia invades Ukraine

And Putin has talked about how we're shortly before World War 3 again. Is it it this time?

Re: Happy things thread!

Big news on my side: I’m going to Paris! Specifically, for the Université Paris-Saclay, where I’ve organised to do a research internship for four months. I may have mentioned this once or twice already, but now I have my visa and it looks like everything’s confirmed, which is nice. Of course, I’m m...

Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to? - All languages

Yesterday, I watched a wildlife documentary about the courtship displays of various species of tropical birds - Dancing With The Birds - which was, oddly enough, the first thing I found on Netflix in a few weeks that I watched all the way to the end.

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

I once read a comment somewhere - I don't remember, perhaps it was even on the ZBB - that some Catalan language activists supposedly put some effort into studying historical developments in Ireland, and they came to the conclusion that Irish was probably doomed once it lost Dublin, and they're there...

Can you determine, with any kind of certainty, to which syllable an intervocalic consonant belongs?

I'm not sure how much to buy this explanation that I read once, but basically Irish was doing reasonably okay up until it was made an Official Language of Ireland. (I'm not sure what the reasoning was, if thats true ...maybe individuals en masse thinking "well, if its official and got governme...

I'd say it would be just a bit too neat if pre-IE languages in Europe (except perhaps in some of the southernmost parts) would have been Afro-Asiatic. Not sure how to describe what I mean by that.

OK, fair warning: this post might get a bit rambling. Also a content warning: it is about changing social attitudes towards child sexualized abuse. * * * * * As I wrote at the time in the "What are you reading, watching and listening to?"-thread, a few weeks ago I watched the Netflix docum...

Re: Elections in various countries

So over in Ireland, two referendums to amend the Constitution failed very decisively. They had been meant to replace old phrases from the original 1937 Constitution that refer to the importance of "the Family", and of women's work in the home. Now, some people seemed to have stayed home or...

What do you expect from a group which identifies itself as Conservative?!? That word is now pretty much an euphemism for "far right".

I think Gute Zeiten - Schlechte Zeiten was originally copied of an Australian soap, though they eventually split the plotlines. It had a couple of imitators for a while; I don't know if it still does.
