Re: Aesthetic Considerations

If the design was up to me, I'd remove borders between areas of different colours, and I'd replace 90deg corners of said areas with rounded corners. Some greater padding and nicer to the eye font wouldn't hurt, either. I can’t imagine how that would result in anything other than a totally illegible...

Is there any dialect which merges the pronunciations of 'chancellor' and 'transfer'? Or is there always at least the opposition between /l/ and /f/?

Re: The Index Diachronica

So, at this point I’ve posted a few mockups, and we seem to have decided on what the final result should be like, more or less. Now we just need to build this thing. At the moment, I’ve been handwriting an HTML page for each family. This is annoyingly laborious and boring. It also limits the capabi...

I'm mildly annoyed that I think I vaguely recall a non English song by a single lyric [ɡa'mɛɾs], but if I were to ever try to look it up, I'd be flooded by 57894621 results about gamers.

Probably a long shot, but does anyone know how did Proto-Germanic *ajjō 'eggs' become Proto-West Germanic *aijiʀu 'id.'? Your mistake is thinking that one choice is only "1 femtohitler" less evil than the other choice.

Indeed, aren't student loans pretty hefty over there? I second that you should maybe just keep applying for jobs and not be let down by the inevitable rejections until you get hired. Although you do know better than me how that would work out.

Wasn't there a phenomenon of activity moving mostly to Discord after a server is created for certain forums and boards? And it's still chit-chat, at that.

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

Came across a cute example of taboo deformation today in--of all languages--Catalan. Apparently maleta "suitcase" in the meaning of "saddlebags" was altered to boneta to avoid the association with mal "bad". ( Maleta , from Old French malete , could be reanalysed as a ...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

I am aware of the Mitian hypothesis, though I was left with the impression that it's just pastime speculation without any substantive research to back it up, other than the pronouns and the odd suffix here and there (and a dozen or so alleged PIU roots (and some research into Altaic, if you count th...

This paper makes the case for Proto-Uralic-Eskimo look pretty reasonable. 95 alleged cognates and multiple sound correspondances, including some other than between initial consonants. Genealogic relationships have been established with much less. Even Ante Aikio doesn't shy away from the idea of PU...

Elsewhere online I came across this: https://toaq.net/ . I know we don’t discuss loglangs very much here, but this one looks particularly well-done and interesting. Don’t know enough formal semantics to properly assess it though. Toaq (pronounced [tʰoaŋ]) is a constructed human language in which ev...

This is more of a statement of historical happenstance than a fact - no IE branch has to be conservative about anything.
If you so much wanted, you could say that Germanic is conservative in keeping the three stop series distinct.

Please work on formatting. Noun phrase order isn't all that clear on first reading. which is treated, syntactically, like a numeral. I thought numerals follow nouns? Anyway, no need to compare particles to vastly different PoS, you can just specify if the particle in question is a proclitic (precedi...
