Re: British Politics Guide

I can see why Theresa May would have good reason to like the EU, especially while she was home secretary (*cough* European Arrest Warrant *cough*), but in other respects she also has good reasons to dislike the EU, because it effectively prevented her from achieving the immigration targets the party...

Re: The 'Is this attested?' Thread

It's sort of split-split-S: split-S in the case marking, accusative in the verbal agreement. That basically how Georgian works. So says WALS, but I can't find a clear explanation of the verbal agreement marking in Georgian anywhere He's wrong, Georgian verbal agreement is also split-ergative, deter...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread's Sequel

When it comes to 1 there's several questions. Firstly why do the aspects have different sets of endings - why not? It's just redundancy and as we all know languages like redundancy, particularly in inflection. As for where they came from... that's basically the same as "where did PIE come from?...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread's Sequel

I would still agree with Weeping Elf that a uvular realisation of h2 is more likely than velar, and would actually be similar to the situation in modern IE, where having "velar fricatives" actually have a uvular realisation is commonplace. That's not to say that it could have patterned lik...

Re: Things Decided for Stupid Reasons

My current project, Asta, has a phonology which was entirely determined by my desire for a romanisation which completely lacks ascenders (I've never much liked them, and I think that's part of the reason I don't use voiced stops much generally), which resulted in the lack of a velar stop (despite ha...

Re: Akiatu scratchpad (subject control; "mwi")

I have suggestion. If you're going to have Austronesian-esque conlang, you should have /ŋ/. And particle conparative (Yes, like English than) No, there's no need a for either of these. Firstly Austronesian is a very broad family, encompassing over a thousand languages of wildly differing structures...

Re: dhoklang scratchpad (NP Cappadocian)

Well, you could enact some such similar changes in your own IE-conlang, and indeed some of those may occur in a daughter language of this, however there is no reason these changes must or should take place at this stage at this time and place, and as this is an older IE language like Greek or Latin ...

Re: dhoklang scratchpad (NP Cappadocian)

I am confused with your conjugation. Can you give the verbal template? Well that's the problem - in IE there is really no verbal template per se outside of root + derivation + inflection, since all the inflectional categories of verbs are marked in a single inflectional suffix. However I will eluci...

Oh for goodness' sake. I was being momentarily flippant, but wasn't attempting to sound dismissive or condescending--I certainly appreciate Sal's discussion, and I think almost everyone else on the board does too. Yeah I can see that, but because nobody in the UK has ever heard the term "Britb...

I see what you're doing, but is it actually possible to have a language with clicks and not have a gazillion consonants? Damin ? Aye, but that's a ritual language; my general impression is that natural languages with clicks have consonant inventories to make the Caucasus and PNW look tame by ...

just in case some readers are wondering who this "Jacob Rees-Mogg" person, is I wouldn't have thought that was necessary - I thought JRM was one of the few politicians other than Treeza people outside the UK know about if only cause he's such an oddball. It's 18 years old, but this is JRM...

I like this, particularly rule 2, I hadn't thought about that change that way before. I can't wait to see what happens in another few thousand years if you bring it up to the present day. is ibi- the "augment"? what's the diachronic source of that? Looks like the augment was added onto the...

Is it attested to use conjugated verb to express genitive relationship. In my conlang Asent'o, alienable possession uses a transitive adjective that is conjugated for its possessor and possessee. For example. (Note that the word itself may change) My book. ngang-g-i kottuka. 3SG>1SG-POSS-PART book....

Re: eskabaskan scratchpad

I think there may be the odd language with a specific malefactive affix, but I think most that have them tend to subsume them under the benefactive. Also have you worked out what your verb template is yet? Caus that's gonna affect how your applicatives work, because if it's anything like Athabaskan ...
