Re: Conlangjugator

The problem is that some features may be fundamentally incompatible. For example, many work on the basis of string substitution which implies one internal model. Mine has a completely different internal model which means symbol substitution is meaningless: Input string -> featural phonetic represen...

Re: British Politics Guide

Meanwhile, in an attempt to steal Parliament's thunder, Nigel "expletive" Farage has resigned from UKIP. Although nobody is yet taking bets on him rejoining to become re-elected as leader; perhaps he's going to form his own political party and attract many Brexiteers.

Re: Conlangjugator

I honestly don't find it particularly surprising that so many people have made their own SCA — I made my own[1] because I wanted features or syntax not supported by any of the ones I could find, and it made for an interesting programming project. That's exactly why I keep asking about a Grand Unifi...

Re: Conlangjugator

Python? Haskell? Wimps! Come on, if you can't do it in Fortran 77 on a 4-bit machine then it isn't worth doing. Seriously, though, I've found both Ruby and Scala to be good languages for an SCA. Pure functional Scala with recursion and immutable objects in particular lends itself to interesting solu...

Re: British Politics Guide

What does that mean? Well, if the Prime Minister and/or the Attorney General is found in contempt, they could be suspended from Parliament (not unheard of) Or, under a little-known law, suspended from a high place in Parliament... The committee also contains Sir Christopher Chope, who may be even w...

Re: Conlangjugator

Likewise, my SCA doesn't use normal regexps but a custom matching and replacing - er - engine? They're much more appropriate to SCAs, and more fun, too! If you don't mind asking, how are they more appropriate? The three things missing that I can think of (ad-hoc groups, features, matching groups in...

Re: British Politics Guide

It's hypothetical, yes, but an intriguing thought-experiment: if the voting system changed to make new parties viable, what would we get? Almost certainly Labour would split into True Socialists and Pink Liberals, and the Conservatives would similarly devolve into pro-and anti-Europe factions; it's ...

Re: British Politics Guide

3) May can't get her deal passed, pisses off the DUP, but the DUP don't VONC her. Instead, they simply refuse to deal with her in future. Perhaps they support a budget here, or an increased-spending-on-Northern-Ireland there, but basically the government cannot get anything passed. At this point, t...

Re: British Politics Guide

And yes, it's certainly possible the ERG are just tormenting May. For one thing, under tory rules, they're only allowed one VONC a year, so they may be saving it for her weakest moment. [I THINK that means no more VONC for twelve months; obviously if it's based on calendar years it's very different...

This isn't important but just an amusing note: a few days ago Raab, then then and now former Brexit Secretary, admitted "he hadn't quite understood the importance" of the Dover-Calais link to the British economy... "If God put the English on an island, he must have had His reasons.&q...

Re: British Politics Guide

It's theoretically possible the government has been neither incompetent nor deceitful, but that seems very unlikely... ignoring and/or concealing legal advice in order to push through pre-determined policy objectives thought up on the back of a napkin is basically how the UK government works. [and ...

This is probably better done as a single page or something where the resources can be grouped by subject or type, rather than as a long thread.

That's... rather unfortunate. I'd like to offer to help, but I'm not sure if I should since I'm not, actually, a qualified therapist.

Of persons

What would be the correct linguistic name for a system of reference which refers to participants in a discourse not by the first/second/third/others system we're all used to, but by appearance in the discourse, so that if Alice speaks to Bob and Bob replies, Bob refers to himself not as "I"...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread

I just contacted a service that helps foreigners in Japan coordinate healthcare to help me set up an appointment with a psychiatrist for anxiety. I'm proud of myself that I am finally taking steps to treat my anxiety, but I'm also frustrated with myself that I've let it get as bad as it has. And it...

Are you looking for responses from native speakers specifically, or just anyone who speaks it?
Ideally those who speak it better than me :-) Well enough to use the past subjunctive every so often.

Una questión para los qui hablan español

How do the two forms of the past subjunctive differ in meaning or connotation for you - amase vs amara?
