Re: Sound Change Critique Thread
w > v / V_C or V_# I bit suspect this is not that realistic. For example, phoneme like /iwk/ can turn in /ivk/ which is harder to pronounce. Probably it's better if w>f b > v / _C happened in Neo-Punic. w > v unconditionally is so trivially common as to be not worth mentioning. /ivk/ is not at all ...

Re: Quechua book poll
This thread reminds me that they were looking for someone to translate Pachacuti's dialogue from Civ6 Gathering Storm on the Civfanatics forum if someone feels up to taking a crack at it. I tried Dido's dialogue but found my Punic not remotely up to the task--not least of all because the VA was basi...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Is it plausible for all roots in a language to begin with a voiced consonant? This has arisen in one of my conlangs due to a pervasively prefixing morphology, together with a lack of root-initial clusters in the proto-language, and subsequent intervocalic voicing of obstruents. Unusual but probably...

This probably sounds dumb, but perhaps because the heart is considered the source of emotion and emotions are mercurial, prone to change at a moment's notice. That would be my guess anyway. ... but in its cousin Biblical Hebrew the kidneys were the seat of emotion. But the heart was the seat of tho...

Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread
Consider the case of the word biology , i.e. /baɪˈɒlədʒi/, which follows a stress on the <o> of <bio> as well. Biology is a Greek-type compound ending in CVCy; these are expected to get antepenult stress. Stress on the second syllable of biopic is unexpected because, as dhok mentioned, the "pi...

...huh. So an alien race came in to invade the Solar system? Okay, generic but possible. So why come here? What did they need in our solar system that they couldn’t have gotten from a hundred-odd closer systems? The Mazzahi were on an expansionist blitz at the time, motivated by a sort of Manifest ...

I would like to see more of these languages I'll post more soon. :) Most interesting indeed! Tell me, how is space nomadism made possible in your world? What kind of effect has it had on the languages’ development? How far does civilization extend? What’s the Inner Solar System like? Thank you. :) ...

If we REALLY wanted to get into headline-ese, that "and" after "seized" could be replaced with a comma instead as well as the other changes. Or for modern headlines it should probably read like this: "Italian authorities order the ship be seized AND YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT H...

This reminds me of a file I recently transcribed where a speaker kept saying /kəmˈperɪbəl/. >_<bbbosborne wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 6:19 pm so apparently demonstrative is pronounced /də.män.strə.tɪv/, not /dɛ.mɪn.streɪ.tɪv/ -_____-

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
It should read "ship be seized"; the sentence as it stands is completely ungrammatical to my ear. Akam chinjir's suggestion "to be seized" wouldn't be grammatically incorrect but still sounds off to me, especially in a journalistic context.

Re: Stuck in a rut
I have a triconsonantal conlang that is also the main focus of its particular project; I go back to the drawing board every time I start to understand Semitic a little better (something that was significantly helped by my a posteriori Punic conlang). At the moment I'm pretty happy with how it's deve...

Does anyone else have a centralized rounded unstressed realization [ɵ] corresponding to stressed [o] or [oʊ̯] for /oʊ/ distinct from /ə/? For instance I notice I generally pronounce tomato as [tʰə̃ːˈmeɾɵ(ː)], showing the contrast between [ɵ] and [ə]. (I also have a more careful pronunciation of tom...

The verb "process", and the noun "process" and its plural "processes". Asking because I've always assumed it's something like [ˈpɹo.sɛs] (both verb and noun) and /ˈpɹo.sɛs.ɪs/ for the plural (at least in RP), but I just heard an American pronouncing the plural somethin...

Well, I will give a disclaimer that I don't know anything about the individual in question; my assumption that he's in North America was based on other features of his accent. Now I'm curious what those features were and whether I can listen to him without causing some kind of ethics issue. :P Mayb...
