I'm not so sure about that. I don't know exactly how effective the troll farms and propaganda are, but given the popularity of regressive authoritarianism they're evidently accomplishing something.

Re: Random Thread

Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was (traditionally) released 57 years ago today. This date will soon become like D-Day: nobody alive will be able to remember it. What I find strange is how eclipsed earlier music seems to be. E.g. I just looked up Frank Sinatra's best album— some at least ...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

It did recede in the sense that the US finally washed its hands of Afghanistan, after two decades. Though Trump ratcheted US support for Israel into hubris-inducing levels, and Biden has only slightly retreated from that. Yes, exactly, and all in all US foreign policy was more objectionable I think...

just orthographic issue (imagine ideograms or con-characters)... you'd be surprised at the computerized coding of names by the states... choosing such a name is just an sectarian/activist's individual will, ready/satisfied to bear the consequences in everyday life... (or to make their child endure ...

ultimately the position of global hegemon is a bit like the position of a mafia boss: a good mafia boss can stay in power for decades, but a bad one... if you're perceived as incompetent or cause your underlings too much trouble they may pick a different one, or go their own way: this sort of obedi...

Re: Names, nouns and their (phonological) restrictions

Speaking of which, I ran into my second Gwenael (oubien Gwenaël} this past weekend, and like the first, he was a Parisian with no clear ties to Bretagne. Was there just a momentary toquade for Breton names in the Métropole in the 80s? Yep; Breton names have been popular since they were allowed (I t...

I was going to mention that Michael seems a lot more popular than Raphael in popular devotion, but linguoboy beat me too it :) In France, the all-powerful registrars only tolerated national celebrity or calendar names... until the births resulting from immigration family reunification made this unte...

Interestingly, most of our data is in the Latin alphabet, which had to go through 16th century Spanish conventions. I really don't know how much material we have in the native script, but I think it's really not much.

Re: War in the Middle East, again

You often hear that from people who aren't exactly progressive luminaries on feminism or LGBT rights themselves. The phrase "scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds" proves to be more and more true. I was really thinking of conservatives. Not that left-leaning folks are entirely blameless,...

Well it's from a leftist, so they're not using it as a brainless offhand for "progressive thing I don't like" The brainless use is so common I'm afraid using either term about instantly loses my attention :) ...about America (and Israel) using progressive politics based on identity to dec...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

Frankly, I can't decide if this goes in here or the us politics thread (because both are relevant), but I saw this video by the Kavernacle about the rise of "woke fascism" or the use of progressive identity politics in service of illiberal policies. I'm very dubious of the 'woke' and 'ide...

Moving back a recent discussion where it belongs :) PS There are other explanations for preferring a fascist or similar: being misguided, misinformed, short-sighted, opportunistic among others. Another factor -- and possibly the main one is that fascists are just way better at propaganda. Here havin...

I don't think that guy was against the idea of protests or saying protests do nothing though. Now we can object to the content of the protest, ie what some of the protesters happen to be currently doing or saying... But it's another debate that we've already had and again, I'm pretty sure no one's g...

I didn't really see your point or Torco's and it's now much clearer. Could you perhaps explain it to me, then? I still don’t really see how any of what they’re saying makes much sense. I don't know if I'll be any good at that sort of thing! The idea is that given the situation, there's no place for...

I’ve just discovered the existence of hemerythrin. Lots of iron in it, makes for violet/magenta-ish blood, apparently. Íröd is lousy with iron, especially in the water. I think the adasar will use that as the bloodborne oxygen carrier. I really liked the theory of humors you made out of that and th...
