Re: English questions

...pre-school kids’ sounds oddly specific to me..
I don't know what "specific" means here.

I have a hunch the sentence will become more natural if I leave out "pre-school"?

He came by scooter with two kids.

(I intended to emphasize the kids are at the pre-school age.)

Re: English questions

"He came by scooter with two pre-school kids" Thank you. (I was still thinking if I need to say, He came by riding the scooter with... to say clearly it's he who rode the scooter. But I think it's also redundant now. ("pre school kids" isn't wrong, but it gives the air of a chil...

Re: English questions

Q: Is the sentence more natural with "being" or without? Or does it make little difference? Or is the sentence just unnatural in either way?
Thank you.

He came by scooter with two pre-school kids being carried on it.

Re: English questions

Today I really had a big breakthrough in English under the help of bradrn. I think I've never been so clear about the tense consistency among clauses in a sentence. I went back to review my writing practices in another forum and have found this one, corrected by Linguoboy. Now I can easily understan...

Re: English questions

I think I've got it. 1. If my understanding is correct, it will become grammatical by changeing the sentence into the present tense: The kids playing on their computers, we are able to enjoy some time alone. 2. And, for a dependent clause, it is grammatical no matter in a present or in a past tense ...

Re: English questions

I saw this sentence in Wikipedia. With the kids playing on their computers, we were able to enjoy some time alone. Q : Is it still grammatical without "with" ? (And the meaning is still the same? Or it has changed?) The kids playing on their computers, we were able to enjoy some time alone.

Re: English questions

4. :?: "There was a forest, deep in it a tower, where lived a fair maiden." Not only is the fourth sentence non-idiomatic, it is also totally ungrammatical. The phrase ‘deep in it a tower’ is at fault here: there are situations where you can create a clause without a verb, but not very ma...
