Re: Randomly generated magic naming language

Hi everyone! Sorry for the delayed response! If you're going to make them pay attention to the words, give them meaning. So, rather than randomly generating strings of syllables, generate basic elements that can be recombined. You could have an elemental system where "fo" is water and &quo...

Re: Randomly generated magic naming language

Also, feel free to give other feedback as well. The set of onset consonants is just the first thing I specifically wanted to ask about. And yes, I realized I forgot to stick to my convention of all caps for romanized text when I set up Awkwords. Oh, well.

Randomly generated magic naming language

I’m designing an RPG where certain elements are randomized per playthrough based on a seed, rather as various elements are randomized per dungeon run in a roguelike. One of the things that is randomly generated for each playthrough is the language from which the incantations for spells are taken. (O...

Re: Romanizing bidental fricatives

Voiced is certainly possible, although only the voiceless one is attested as part of a real language’s phonemic inventory. <f> works, although I think I’d rather avoid simple <h> due to the language in question allowing a wide range of CC sequences and several other consonants currently being repres...

Re: Romanizing bidental fricatives

(I admit an ulterior motive for this thread: I’m fascinated by the different things bidental fricatives apparently sound like to different people, judging from how I’ve seen people transcribe them in the past.)

Re: Romanizing bidental fricatives

Regarding the rest of the inventory: It both keeps changing because I’m indecisive and has a fairly obvious (to me) representation of any other sounds i’ve considered including. Also, enough of it is made of sounds that are marginal to human language (non-hominin primate speakers) that it’s a pain t...

Romanizing bidental fricatives

How would you guys romanize fortis and lenis (voiceless and voiced or something similar) bidental fricatives? I’m interested in both of the following, if they differ: 1) Your preferred romanization with no restrictions 2) A romanization that does not use diacritics, for a language that also has alve...

Re: Loss of grammatical number

Thanks, guys. Just for clarity, what languages do you consider to lack number marking? A few relatively well-known languages will do. Lacking obligatory grammatical number marking for verbs and most NPs is probably enough, e.g. for the purposes of this thread I’d consider Standard Chinese to lack nu...

Re: Loss of grammatical number

Ser, thanks, but I’m aware of all that. I’m specifically looking for cases where a language went from generalized number marking to none or nearly none. Hell, as far as I’m concerned French still has full number marking, it just localized the nominal part of it to mostly-obligatory determiners.

Re: Undrivi vowel harmony

Thanks for the feedback! It’s clear some examples are in order. For reference, I’ve included the language’s consonant inventory at the bottom of the post, although it’s not necessary for understanding these examples. The example words are gwirú “toad”, dzafe “sign”, kạvli “bowl”, dọldé “leaf”, mìs “...

Re: Conlang template

While they’re mostly still etymologically transparent, the majority of Mandarin content words are two syllables, and I could see the language becoming something like this in the future.

Re: Undrivi vowel harmony

I’m particularly concerned about stability since 1) I’m aware of two-dimensional harmony systems, but only where one of the dimensions is roundness, e.g. Turkish. I don’t know of any natlangs that quite have this system. 2) Both closeness and backness harmony somewhat resemble ATR harmony, and so I ...

Re: Undrivi vowel harmony

Ofher tidbits about the vowel system: All vowels can occur short and long. Long vowels are not distinct from sequences of identical short vowels, and can be analyzed as such, although historically a lot of them derive from sequences of a vowel plus a vocalized velar coda consonant, and the writing s...

Re: Undrivi vowel harmony

I’m tempted to post about the language’s writing system, which is a sort of syllabary-abugida hybrid where the inherent vowel of a character (one of the three vowel archiphonemes) depends on the historical plain/palatalized/labialized status of the onset. It’s related to this and I think it’s intere...
