Re: Is writing natural?
Say you're a Scythian who happens to get caught in an Assyrian raid around 1000 BCE. You're enslaved, you see this "writing" technology, and later you escape. Do you invent writing for Scythian? Probably not. It's an alien concept and it doesn't meet the needs of your culture. On the othe...

North Mekeo has six consonants: /b m v k ŋ ɫ/. Source on that? Wikipedia lists additional /t n s ʔ/ for just Mekeo. According to Jones' Towards a Lexicogrammar of Mekeo , it has seven - /b g v z m ŋ l/. There's a lot of difference between the dialects though; the inventories are North: /b g v z m ŋ...

And speaking of, when did the referendum magically...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
Can both ʂ and ɕ merge into s when following k or p, but not t? I'm not sure of any natlang precedent, but I think so. /t/ would be able to assimilate in POA (i.e. /ts tʂ tɕ/ → [ts ʈʂ t̠ʲɕ]) while /p k/ couldn't. That would make the t+S more distinct than the k+S or p+S (where S = /s ʂ ɕ/) and thus...

Re: Is writing natural?
Another way of looking at it is to take the word 'natural' to mean not just part nature generally, but part of our nature. As in, a behavior humans have an inherent, cross cultural propensity to do. In which case no, writing is clearly not natural. It's not natural for the majority of people, but i...

This way, only 35 symbols, all occurring on most keyboards, are used to romanise 69 sounds in a completely logical and aesthetically pleasing way. Logical, yes, but I’m not sure how aesthetic I think it is… I was sort of joking, although I actually do like the result. A random text: /kʼɨɲɑdʑ ɢʁɨʕeq...

This must be one of the most amazing orthographies I’ve ever seen. And what font are you using? I can’t see ꟃ, and I can’t find any fonts which support it either. But according to Wikipedia it looks like this: The ꟃ shows up in Symbola for me. _______________________________________________________...

Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread
Yeah, I suppose those are pretty unusual. One other unusual thing I forgot: my ‘aspiration’ for /t/ is actually mostly affrication, so resolute and said to himself should really be [ˈɻʷe̞zəˌɫʉːʔtˢʰ]~[ˌɻʷe̞zəˈɫʉːʔtˢʰ] and [ˈse̞d̚tˢə̆ɪmˌse̞(ɰ~w)f]~[ˈse̞d̚tˢəhɪmˌse̞(ɰ~w)f]. Ah, that makes more sense.

Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread
The reason there's [ɫ] in "resolutely" is because it's following a schwa. The velarisation/darkness isn't as strong as it is in the coda, but it is definitely darker than "logarithm." I probably should have been consistent and used [ᵊ] ([ˌɻʷe̞zᵊˈɫʉˑt’ ̚lɪi̯]). Interesting, I had...
