Re: United States Politics Thread 46

Exactly, we need to consider what the alternative is. Realistically the only remotely probable alternatives to the US presidential election are Trump being president and Biden being president, the latter being clearly better on not just foreign policy but also environment, democracy, and more or les...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

In any case, social security does not take from the old to give to the young, notably retirement. I argue that a good role of a state: improves the conditions of the citizens and inhabitants, notably the most vulnerable, while encouraging virtue i.e. positive behaviour and discouraging vice i.e. ne...

Re: Random Thread

It's now been about ten years since I bought the first handful of DVDs that eventually grew into a fairly large de facto DVD collection. I say "de facto" because I never set out to collect DVDs, the way people set out to collect sports cards or action figures. I just thought it would be n...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

No. Socialism, like welfare, is when you take money from the old and the rich to give it to the young and the poor, which is a ghastly inversion of the true purpose of government: taking money from the young and the poor to give it to the old and the rich. I got a check in the mail from the governo...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

The Democratic Party is run by crypt-keepers (Pelosi), cops (Harris), and cowards (Pelosi and Harris). As far as their West-Wing-soaked brains are concerned, Biden is doing a great job. If Trump wins again, they'll be the last ones to see it coming. If Trump wins again, it'll be like the first time...

Are Americans that interested in socialism? No. Socialism, like welfare, is when you take money from the old and the rich to give it to the young and the poor, which is a ghastly inversion of the true purpose of government: taking money from the young and the poor to give it to the old and the rich...

Re: Elections in various countries

I as member of LFI went to a Glucksmann meeting and prefer his position on Ukraine, more coherently in favour of human rights and not blaming NATO for Putin.

Finally, how clean we should be is deeply affected by culture and climate. You can keep pretty clean with just water and no soap, but your fellow sedentary apes may screw up their noses at you. Another interesting issue in its own right. Everyone here presumably agrees that body odor stinks whereas...

I was wrong as the PVV got first place. They are cordon sanitaire'd thankfully, so the most likely scenario seems to be the coalition I proposed plus D66.

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread

After I had a very productive and successful (by my standards) day yesterday, I got a lot less stuff done today, mostly because I couldn't think of much to do in the first place - I had mostly done what I wanted to get done yesterday. (I'm not from the US, so there's no big holiday today here.) May...

Re: Venting thread

Over the past month, youtube has changed their policies to ban adblockers. At first it merely pressured me to ditch the adblocker but now it refuses to show videos at all. Unfortunately that means my main source of video and even music has disappeared. Perhaps it's for the best as I have been tryin...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

You are surely right. The main reason for grouping British English together is just a variation on 1° assuming one language = one country, which so far from the truth of 7000 languages for 200 countries and 2° lack of general knowledge, in linguistics as in other domains. It's like when people are s...

Re: Elections in various countries

Heck, the Democrats are now possibly more left-wing than ever, given their active siding with unions. Moosetache's whole argument rests on characterising the current political system as blackmail which does not convince me. It's certainly preferable to getting raided and paying tribute to avoid furt...

Some sorts of "modern" transcriptions do not seem right to me, such as ones which transcribe /iː/ and /uː/ as "[ɪj]" and "[ʉw]"; of course, this is because in the dialect here these are the pure monopythongs i and [y~ʉ~u]. Well, of course, these ‘modern transcriptions’...

Unfortunately the chances are looking better than I would have thought. For me the most distressing aspect of those polls is how Biden is tanking among young voters. It's not clear how much of this is due to recent factors (e.g. his staunch support of Israel), which could be less important months f...

Re: Elections in various countries

My problem is that I can't find a single popular candidate in the world who will benefit me in any way whatsoever. They're all arguing about whether to kill me slowly or quickly. On the one hand, a slow death means I might live long enough to see a brighter future. On the other hand, with how aggre...

Goddamn it. I spilled my lunch at work. Between the twelve hour shift and my commute, that means thirteen hours with nothing to eat. My breakfast was barely anything as it is because I need to leave for work so early. Is there nowhere nearby where you may buy food? autumn, despite its golden splend...

The link with constructivism and similar epistemological positions, yes, that may be linked to Heidegger among others, despite him being on the wrong side of WW2, as you say. With environmentalism, I'm not so convinced. After all, there are direct links between our relationship with screens and env...
