Re: Elections in various countries
And there seems to be only three lists that are obviously worse than the two major ones: Alliance Royale, La ligne claire and Liste de la Reconquête (the latter two going on about a supposed 'great replacement') The 5% hurdle got put in just when there are so many candidates, so maybe even a third o...

Re: British Politics Guide
Yup! And Yougov have the Tories behind not just the Brexit party, Labour and LibDems but also the Greens for the Euro elections. The dodos are coming home to roost!

Re: British Politics Guide
Yep, that's more or less it!
And, to top things off, we've got a ComRes/Torygraph poll on the next general election showing the Tories are looking to be one point behind Farage's lot at the moment, with the Tories as low as 19%.

Re: British Politics Guide
And the post-local-election polls are out! The Tories are only one point ahead of the Brexit party for the latest general election poll (22 v 21, with Labour at 28), while the European polls put the Tories not just behind the Brexit party and Labour, but even the Lib Dems. Obviously, these are just ...

Re: British Politics Guide
Ah I see. It's mostly a question of methods. This can contrast with yellow vests which took 5 months to lose some of its support. On the other hand, a climate emergency does seem to have gotten a response from parliament, both at Scottish and UK level but at least the first seems to be more to do wi...

Re: Words perceived as opposites/antonyms that aren't.
I just read about this in Lehmann, Alise et Martin-Berthet, Françoise, Lexicologie : sémantique, morphologie, lexicographie (Armand Colin : 2013) for my thesis. They mention that co-hyponyms can have synonym- or antonym-like relationship to each other, like 'buy' and 'steal' that are both subsets of...

Re: British Politics Guide
It would profit a politician in showing themselves as honest and realistic and able to put themselves into question. Yes, I've often wondered why retail stores don't list their markup on the sticker, or why restaurants don't put a plaque on the door explaining every time they've had a health code v...

I wholeheartedly support Extinction Rebellion in their cause for a more radical approach against climate change, a major threat to life on Earth as we know it. Sal's post does not change this support, but enlightens me about a certain negative aspect of it, which has since been retracted . Sal's po...

Re: British Politics Guide
One major difference between the local elections and future elections is that there will be the Brexit party and Change UK, currently polling high and reasonable respectively, especially in EU election polls. There was actually a single election of a single seat in Scotland: a byelection in Dundee d...

There was a generational difference in the vote, but over 80s voted remain like the young uns. (see at 12:20 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KGleM2Zagg ) On the other hand, what he said about the political situation in Norway doesn't seem to be true, so you may take that with a pinch of salt ...

Re: British Politics Guide
I think you're right. I do think a general election could solve the deadlock though. This way, Corbyn would negotiate the deal and get, while not full support, at least more than May.

Re: British Politics Guide
As a Scottish independentist, I would say that Sturgeon's announcement was made inevitable in 2016. In 2016, it was said in the 2016 SNP manifesto that they would go for a second independence referendum if there were material changes. And they gave the example of if Scotland was taken out of the EU ...

Re: British Politics Guide
May's 2017 result, 42% of the electorate, was actually the biggest Tory share of the vote since 1979. [that's not a great triumph for May, but rather a reflection of the collapse of the Lib Dems] As far as i understand it, the Tories mostly gained from the UKIP while Labour gained from the Lib Dems...

Re: British Politics Guide
It's worth mentioning, btw, that when Yougov asked if May should be removed as PM or kept in power, 40% wanted her kept, and only 34% wanted her gone. With a stratospheric minus 14% net approval rating, she's one of the country's most popular politicians - only one point behind Boris for the title ...

As the death toll rises, For the moment, there has been a grand total of 4 deaths in the yellow jacket movement: 2 protesters and 2 drivers. The latter 2 cases were basically road traffic accidents. And one of the protestors was an old lady gassed by a CRS. With tear gas, banned by the Geneva Conve...

Re: British Politics Guide
Two Labour MPs have become Independents On the other hand, when I look at which two it was, it turns out to be Jared O'Mara, who was previously suspended for sexist and homophobic remarks, and Frank Field, who was deselected by his constiuency for siding with the government over Brexit. So they're ...

Re: British Politics Guide
Labour under Corbyn got a massive boost in voting intention during the election campaign period just prior to the 2017 election. This resulted in the best swing they've had in decades. This could be repeated in the next general election.

Re: Elections in various countries
I was in my Theory of argumentation class today and the professor said he knew people who preferred Hamon or Mélenchon but who voted Macron on the basis of a 'useful vote' to keep Fillon from getting to the second round. So Mélenchon, and Hamon besides, has a larger potential voter base than it woul...
