Re: Elections in various countries

In both states, voter turnout was a good deal higher than in their previous state legislative elections. Turnout rose from 47.9 to 60.5 percent in Brandenburg and from 49 percent to 65 percent in Saxony. Ah, that explains the difficulty in prediction. In terms of population, roughly the same number...

On-topic, are there are any other words in English that aren't of Welsh origin that follow Welsh orthography, like 'of' and 'off'? :P

Oops, I edited to include another sentence and you replied in the meantime and the board didn't warn that someone had posted in between times. Next time I'll just make another post.

Re: Elections in various countries

As far as I can tell from discussion on the Europe Elects Facebook page, similar incidents have occurred in the past with other parties. It's just the AfD that gets all up in arms about having to follow the same procedures as everyone else. Those are disappointing exit polls because normal polls sug...

I had never heard of A&W's and had still not understood what 'root beer' referred to so I looked up both. It appears that A&w's is an American fast food chain that not only sells root beer, but also an ice cream-covered variant . And they manage to claim it's world-renowned. And I can't tell...

Anyway, it could be worse! She could have tried taking the Scottish Conservatives out of the Conservative Party... instead, she's just quitting to spend more time with her family. Would that actually be worse? It would certainly mean suddenly 13 less members of the government. On the other hand, sh...

Or, more exactly, they decided to leave the government, probably in order to gain a majority, and then an alternative government managed to form to replace the earlier one. And the current trend in the polls since Salvini's attempt at full power is gains for the Democratic Party and for 5 Star while...

Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to? - All languages

It seems there is similar semantic development involved in narlgon to the one involved in tiroumanom : narlgon means specifically plays involving scenes of the Mahabharata and not just any play. I'll check the others out as well. it was largely due to Indian influence in Réunion that I got intereste...

Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to? - All languages

tiroumanom (and variant pronunciations) is indeed there. It's a word of Tamil origin to refer to Indian mariage, whereas maryazh refers to Christian marriage. Do you recognise the title Narlgon ? I'm surprised to hear that the Ziskakan song from 23 years ago reminds you more of Indian film music. I...

Glad you like them! The band members of Ziskakan have changed several times over the decades. The only permanent member has been the leader, Gilbert Pounia. Some original members are now politicians, lexicographers and/or authors. The style has changed along with the membership changes of course. Th...

Re: Different word categories to express a concept

In Indonesian, frequentity adverbs (sering, jarang, though not kadang-kadang) in English are often expressed via auxiliary verbs (The dictionary says adverbs, but the syntax says that it's auxiliary verb). Kemarin aku pergi ke pasar || Sering aku pergi ke pasar || Sudah aku pergi ke pasar Aku kemar...

Lucas's announcement is disappointing. I agree with Sturgeon's response. And there the Greens were rising in the polls in the midst of both a restructuring of the political landscape and a climate crisis.

Then again, all of the most recent polls were conducted prior to the msot recent byelection, which saw a Lib Dem gain in a previously Tory seat. This could have repercussions on national voting. I expect at least one or two polls in the next batch showing the Lib Dems close to the Tories, partly due...

Re: British Politics Guide

The Tories aren't that high in the polls. They got much more in 2017. And, as you say in your first paragraph, they lost a 20% lead in the last election. Sure, a part of the former Tory vote is currently going for the Brexit Party, who are currently (in these volatile times) polling between 9% and 1...
