Re: Random Thread
Anyone interested in reading about Irish/British history in German? Perhaps your first language is something else, and you want to brush up on your German, or specifically on a pseudo-scholarly register of German? Earlier this year, for no good reason, I wrote this it-was-meant-to-be-brief-but-ended...

Re: Happy things thread!
a really interesting collection of essays in a rather lovely edition I received my copy of The Philosophy Graduate’s Fallacy and other essays (by Raphael Landeck, ed. Mark Rosenfelder) yesterday and am really enjoying it! Oh, thank you very much! I wouldn't have thought anyone would like the book s...

Re: Challenge: American English as a separate language
Since Travis brought up subtitles: I have the impression that movies, TV shows, etc. rarely get different BE and AE subtitles, while, at least on Netflix, you can apparently often choose between Spanish Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Portuguese Portuguese, and Brazilian Portuguese subtitles.

Re: AI in conlanging - present and future
This is what AI experts have been predicting for a few years now - and I fully believe AI will be able to write novels by 2030 and will be able to consistently generate Nobel Prize worthy novels by 2034-35. Well, AI experts have a psychological, and in many cases, also a financial motive to overrat...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
What movement is that? The movement to hold Israel accountable for war crimes? The BDS movement? The movement to recognise Palestinian statehood? Enlighten me. The people chanting "Jew Jew cowardly pig, come out and fight alone!" (As I don't have to tell you, it rhymes in German.) Oh, and...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
And, yes, Raphael, frankly that is the worst kind of bothsidesism. There is a massacre going on and it's being perpetrated by Israel on the people of the West Bank and Gaza. Saying "but they would do the same given the chance" is literally the justification used by every committer of mass...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
The points made in the back-and-forth between bradrn and Linguoboy illustrate fairly well why, while I absolutely don't support Israel, I'm not really interested in supporting the pro-Palestinian movement, either. No, I don't care if people think that that's the worst kind of bothsidism. When one si...

I don't really know enough about programming to follow this, but - wasn't the original point of zeptoforth to go back to the basics with a bare metal rather than higher level language?

Re: "Experiencer"
Well, natural languages are nothing more than conlangs reworked by a very large number of fans, This is not true I rarely ever agree with xxx, but they have a point there. Natural languages were created by human beings, after all, so you could interpret them as a form of collaborative conlangs.

Re: Do you think it will ever be possible to go back in time?
If time travel were possible without requiring causality loops, how was Hitler never assassinated by a time traveler? One potential explanation is raised here - that the world as it exists actually is the best of all possible worlds... say in every timeline without Hitler we get Uber-Nazis or somet...

But the real question is, what's the plan? How are old folks supposed to, y'know, eat? Is everybody super enthused at the idea of taking Grandma in? IIRC the idea is to have people invest money before they retire, and then live of those investments once they're retired. One of the many problems wit...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
My impression is that the antisemitism and other extremism is mostly pushed top-down from the government; of course it’s hard to avoid picking up antisemitic beliefs in that environment, but at the same time people are able to recognise government propaganda for what it is. I suspect that, while ma...
