Re: British Politics Guide

Apparently a lot of Tory MPs claim that May's speech was very moving. Right-wingers who are moved by something? That's possible?

Re: British Politics Guide

After May's speech, there's now a flurry of reports about what happened behind closed doors that work the way that Torry MPs talk to journalists who then report what they heard from them. Among other things, May promised not to lead the Tories in the next General Election.

Re: British Politics Guide

This being British Conservative politics, journalists get to note on Twitter that the "banging and cheering" as May enters the 1922 Committee is "not that loud".

Re: British Politics Guide

Besides, I don't know what exactly the broader political implications are if May wins this by a bare majority.

Re: Elections in various countries

All this talk of the various types of French monarchists reminds me that, in the first years after 1871, France had the paradox political setup of being a republic in which monarchists had a majority in the legislature, with monarchy being avoided because the monarchists couldn't agree on which mona...

Re: British Politics Guide

Ok, I just saw a claim on Twitter that an SNP MP has said that if Corbyn doesn't introduce a motion of no confidence until the end of today, "other parties" will. That takes the whole thing to the next level, I guess.

(Pedantic note: that blog post claims that Les Miserables is about the revolution of 1830; in fact, it (or at least the book; I dunno about the musical) is about a failed attempt at revolution that happened a while later.)

Re: British Politics Guide

In theory, if there was a majority to cancel Brexit in Parliament, Parliament could simply change any laws that might mandate Brexit. But that's not going to happen.

Re: British Politics Guide

Meanwhile, the European Court of Justice has decided that the UK could, in principle, unilaterally cancel Brexit - something I hadn't been sure about at all until now.

Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to? - All languages

One of several books I'm trying to read at the moment is The Medical Detective , by Sandra Hempel, about cholera in the 19th century. One little bit of information that I find quite interesting is that apparently, during the Second Cholera Pandemic (1826-1837), there were conspiracy theories in some...

Re: Elections in various countries

-Lowering the taxes: yeah. Thought it's not just about the taxes; it's about purchasing power. It's claimed that the demands are incoherent because the protesters ask for less taxes and more social spending -- but it's only incoherent if you're unwilling -as LREM is- to shift the burden of tax towa...

I am sort of looking forward to international media people, politicians, etc. trying to pronounce "Kramp-Karrenbauer".

Re: Elections in various countries

Sort of election related: At the party convention of Germany's conservative CDU, Angela Merkel's handpicked successor, the rather dull and grey Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, was elected new party chairperson on the second ballot with 517 of 999 votes. Doesn't get much tighter than that. She narrowly b...
