Re: Predictive text toy
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. What was it a hobbit-hole gave to a hobbit? It was ...

How my daughter arrives at [ˈɫɘːʁɫi(ː)] is probably [ˈɫɘtəːʁəːɫi(ː) > ˈɫɘɾəːʁəːɫi(ː) > ˈɫɘɾəːʁɫi(ː) > ˈɫɘəʁɫi(ː) > ˈɫɘːʁɫi(ː)] (if the preceding is confusing, note that while vowels in unstressed syllables can be long, oftentimes they are shorter than short vowels in stressed syllables). What accen...

Indeed, entire empires and civilisations have been wiped out by volcanos (and accompanying tidal waves). It's widely thought that the most powerful and sophisticated empire in Europe, at one point, was obliterated at least in part by a volcano (with invaders and migrants finishing the job), leading...

Another one has taken to selling (in theory - the staff warn people not to order it because it's disgusting) "bonfire spice" flavour, which at least makes a little more sense but is still a pretty weird concept... Apparently 'bonfire spice' has "a rich caramel toffee flavour, a sprin...

Re: Cheyadeneen Scratchpad
Do you pronounce r in park? If so, you speak a rhotic dialect of English. If not, you speak a non-rhotic dialect. That's it, as I understand things ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhoticity_in_English . It's the basically the same here. When r is at the end of a Cheyadeneen word you generally don't...

Re: Cheyadeneen Scratchpad
“r” is generally non-rhotic, unlike Vedreki Rhotic is basically a fancy word for r-like so I have no idea what you mean by this. How can r be not like r?* As with Vedreki, voice assimilation both progressive and regressive occurs eg a voiced obstruent (stop or fricative) is unvoiced prior to a foll...

Key L = liquid/semivowel/approximant N = nasal O = obstruent [ɩ → ɪ] / {L_, _L} [ɩ → ʊ] / {N_, _N} [ɩ → y] / {O_, _O} I don't know what your possible syllable structures are, but it looks like your sound change rules are not specific enough. What happens to, say LɩO? Also, why does this protolang v...

Is there a term for when an underspecified phoneme becomes specified in a certain environment? For example I have underspecified /c/ appearing as [tʲ] and [kʲ] in free variation, but always [tʲ] after /n/. Anyone suggest a better term than 'POA specification'?

Excellent stuff! Do you have a diagram of their vocal tract? I think I get it but a visual would help. In particular, it would be helpful to see how the movement of the phonic lip bone changes the cavity shape. Can you expand on the airflow? If it's egressive in all cases, your 'pop' and 'click' wou...

So i'd like to showcase some alt-orthographies and visual symbols for languages, without the pretense of people thinking i intend any of them to catch on. I think you're pretty safe with that on here! I for one am happy to entertain conlinguistic ideas without regard for real-world feasibility; sim...

Still not satisfied with my conscript. It seems like it has too many horizontal lines and the implementation of features is rather complicated and abstract. I have been trying to find inspiration for alternative proposals but it seems like all the good ideas for scripts are taken. My sketches keep ...
