For me, incredulous is a distictly emotional scepticism. "She was incredulous" carries the sense of She could hardly believe something so preposterous had been claimed

Re: Languages that feel cool
I just ran across this in a Youtube comment on a song by the French band La Femme: Je suis sûr que si le morceau était sorti en Anglais, personne n'aurait bronché car l'anglais est plus mélodieux que le français, or ce morceau à une belle mélodie et le fait de chanter en français crée une sorte de ...

Re: Project Mammoth Hunter - Help me make my first conlang
Hardly any language distinguish [ɨ] and [ɯ]. Otherwise, just say u , but force the lips to take shape of i . (The exact opposite process is used to form [y]). Despite the method of production, it's actually phonetically quite similar. I read that Acehnese associate their back unrounded vowel with G...

So how do people say baths ? Apparently I have [bæˑðz], which caused consternation among my coworkers today. [bæˑðz] sounds very West Country/Cornish to me! baths is very variable for me. I have [bɑθs] or [bæθs] only in careful speech - vowel depending on how northern I'm feeling (various social fa...

You describe the disynthetic species inversion as a rule preventing pronouns from appearing outside the...

It occurs only when the verb is in the transitive species, when the subject is female (i.e. of the damùn, yanha or maòkosònga) and Là (etc), and when the direct object is male (i.e. of the yojo or òro) and Là (etc) : I don't get the part in bold. It looks like some kind of gender system? I'm intere...

There's a lot of crossover between exhilarating and exciting , but exciting is much more general, and exhilarating somewhat narrower in meaning. It's definitely more intense, as others have said. I'd say exhilaration carries more of a sense of adrenaline, a thrill, or a rush. It works better as a de...

At around age 9 I used the conjunction 'for' in the sense of 'because' in a piece of writing and my teacher marked it incorrect (though I knew it was quite correct, thank you very much).

Occasionally, some ambitious local bureaucrat will get it into their heads to impress the boss by surveying the religious beliefs of foreign teachers, particularly at universities and public schools. Since this is a bureaucratic status game that is not really about you so much as it is about somebo...

A paragraph of the story I'm currently writing in Leima becomes Tolkienian... So Eine lay down in the boat and slept. During the night, Raimra heard a voice speaking to him over the the water, but he did not understand it. He called out, but the speaking ceased. 48. In the morning Raimra lifted the ...

That [ɹ] isn't postalveolar, though. Also, I'm a bit too under sway of the idea that palatals are coronals, maybe a bit too under the sway. Though for me at least [ʃ] and [j] seem to be in about the same place (with the tongue body maybe a bit further forward for [ʃ]?). Heh, I missed that detail. F...

Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread
for me the postalveolar constriction is usually laminal rather than apical, at least in initial position That makes it sound awfully close to j . Taking this as a reference, [j] is produced by constriction between the forward part of the tongue body and the hard palate, while laminal [ɹ] is produce...

Looks to me like it recognized where the quote is from and provided random quotes from the same work. On the contrary—those aren’t actual Bible verses. But it’s impressive that they’re believable not only as Bible verses, but as verses specifically from the books they claim to be from ! I'll agree ...
