Re: Happy things thread!
My band has released its first album! It contains six instrumental pieces in a style somewhere between post-rock, post-metal, progressive, and alternative. Maybe some of you might like our music... (I definitely do, but I'm of course biased ;) ) I enjoyed this album! Will probably listen again some...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
Has anyone experienced similar while learning a tonal language? Or have tips to learn vocabulary as distinct words WITH the tones? Should I continue learning phrases/sentences the way I have, as almost mini-songs? I had the exact same experience learning Thai. Phrases even of two words were much ea...

Re: Conworld random thread
I came across the interesting concept of 'bijective decimals' today. They're a positional number notation that doesn't use zero; instead, the digits have the values one to ten. Thus, if we use 'A' for the digit 'ten', and write the most significant digit on the left, twenty would be written '1A' an...

redid how the telephone system works in my concountry, for some reason?? IMO this is good enough for a full post, e.g. in a thread about Transemilia (which I'd be interested to read more about btw). I might be missing some basic understanding of how telephone networks work, but how does the network...

Re: The Ohwiste - a reincarnating conpeople
This was interesting! Have you seen Worldbuilding Notes on YouTube? Yes, it's one of my favourite channels! Although I have a note of the initial idea and the name Ohwiste from 2016, her video on the topic definitely served to suggest the vessel-dwelling between bodily lives. Now, we know how the s...

The Ohwiste - a reincarnating conpeople
The mood for a bit of conworlding took me a little while back, here's what came of that. I'm enjoying my attempt to present the Ohwiste's own understanding of themselves without drawing lines between belief and truth. The Ohwiste The Ohwiste are a small society of reincarnating people (they are huma...

Which sounds longer to you: “half an hour” or “thirty minutes”? For me they feel the same. Relatedly, how do you all tend to quote the time of day? Do you lean towards constructions like 'x past y' and 'x to y' or number-quoting like 'xx:yy'? E.g. is 5:10 "ten past five" or "five ten...

(I was going to vent a bit about health insurance... but then I thought, not in front of the Americans .) The thread is supposed to be all inclusive... As grateful as I am for the NHS, it's certainly not perfect! I think I'd dare to grumble about it here if I had a complaint. But I share your senti...

Re: Pronunciations you had to unlearn
It just occurred to me that /ˈkadusejəs/ is probably not the correct way to pronounce caduceus in English... Turns out it's /kəˈdjuːʃəs/ or /kəˈdjuːsiəs/. With my British accent, that's [kəˈdʒuːʃəs] which to me feels like a mouthful of potatoes!
(EDIT: correct spelling is caduceus, doh)
