Re: Confusing headlines

I know very few Brits who still use the term "chemist('s)" for the local dispenser/ary. They're nearly always called pharmacies nowadays. Where in Britain? I'm in East London and would only ever use "chemist" - I've only heard "pharmacy" from foreigners. East Midlands....

Re: Confusing headlines

From the BBC: Inside the chemist made entirely out of felt now apparently corrected to Inside the chemist's made entirely out of felt Ah yes - a person made entirely out of felt would have seemed a bit odd. Bonus points is that, for a lot of people from a US, a chemist is a chemistry researcher, wh...

In this song by Welsh speaking band Sŵnami: Uno, Cydio, Tanio, the lead singer aspirates the /t/ in tanio so strongly it sounds like [t͡s] to me.

Numbers (for Janko) Leima has names for numbers one to ten and powers of one hundred. One to ten have two forms - a full word meaning 'a set of size x', and a reduced prefix. Full word Prefix Value daa /dɑː/ d(a)- one gea /gɛ͡ə/ g(e)- two moe /mɜː/ m(o)- three ame /ˈamɛ/ am- four oru /ˈɔɾu/ or- fiv...

Re: Leima

I dunno, those ‘modifier’ constructions seemed quite different to me — though on the other hand, if they do turn out to be as similar as you say, then it could well be more parsimonious to analyse them as one construction. The thing that makes it confusing is that I decided to use the same morpholo...

Re: Leima

Ooh, look, a language with a closed verb class! My favourite type. It’s good to see a conlang experimenting with word classes. (And, to forestall any argument, I would analyse these ‘auxiliaries’ as a closed class of 15 verbs — they seem to be used in predominantly verbal contexts. The monovalent ‘...

Re: Leima

Am I correct in my impression that Leima has only two stops, /d/ and /g/? Yes. Leima's phoneme inventory is /d g m n ɾ h j w i u ɛ ɔ a/ with an allophonic chain d > ɾ > l in various contexts. I originally had /ɨ ʉ/ instead of /i u/, but eventually gave up on /ɨ/. Alternation of /u~ʉ/ still lingers,...

Here's my attempt at the approach bradrn took in presenting a conlang via annotated text ( here ). I think it is. "Air-con" is standard for me, too. I've only ever heard Americans refer to it as "AC".

Re: Conlang Random Thread

Yes, you just put E or EPEN(TH) to indicate an epenthetic "morpheme" Yeah, you don't gloss it. It's like you said non-morphemic and doesn't have any meaning, it's just allophony or sandhi etc. Sometimes it's important to indicate epenthesis so people don't get confused about the random in...

Re: Conlang Random Thread

Are there any conventions for glossing intruding non-morphemic material? I looked through the Leipzig rules but didn't find anything relevant. I don't how prevalent such a process is in natlangs (or even if it's an acceptable analytical approach). Some examples in Leima of phonological rules for aff...
