Re: bradrn’s scratchpad
Why the term Adnominal rather than Determiner for that particular series? Just curious ‘Determiner‘ in IE grammar generally refers to a syntactic slot which can be filled by a whole range of different items: articles, demonstratives, possessives, quantifiers, etc. Eŋes doesn’t have any single slot ...

Re: 2024 Total Solar Eclipse
I was six for the 1999 eclipse (by calculation, not memory). I don't remember the eclipse itself, despite probably witnessing it, but I do remember everyone talking about it and the special eclipse glasses.

Re: The problem of "finding the right word"?
Yup, this was a big problem for me for ages (now it's more of a little problem). Had so many phonology and grammar ideas but couldn't make the two marry up with morphology that felt right. Somehow I've learned to moderate, by working so much on Leima, which deliberately has a somewhat unnaturalistic...

Re: A guide to writing systems
Ooh, very interesting! I don’t think I’ve seen a brushed conscript before. Fantastical scripts uses brush-pens for many of her designs, if that counts. I'm sure I must have seen others in the past too. (But surely the historical Tangut script is quite bizarre enough?) Oh definitely! But it was the ...

…because I submitted my Master’s thesis a month ago, and already I’m feeling that urge again to lecture people on a topic in excruciating detail. Excellent :D Most of my early conlanging work was script creation too. Although, I've never posted much of it to the board, because I assumed our crowd w...

Really? Do you not have gallon jugs of milk in the UK? Like this: https://pics.walgreens.com/prodimg/418563/450.jpg Our milk comes in pints! At the supermarket, there are plastic bottles of 1, 2, 4 and 6 pints. And the glass bottles the milkman delivers are 1 pint too. Bear in mind imperial pints a...

I use AdBlock - I haven't had any message from YT telling me to disable it, but these days I'm getting the yellow bar, and sometimes a half-second of audio before it just turns black - then it takes a while before the actual video loads. I'm guessing adblock is letting the ad play but blocking the a...

Re: What do you call ...
My grandparents chose what they wanted to be called, and as far as I know that's normal for the UK. So I have a maternal Nana and Grandpa, and a paternal Gran and Grandad. Incidentally, my Gran is my dad's stepmum, and we refer to his mother (who passed away before I was born) as Grandma. Where I gr...

A handout is a very informal way to package a small text, often stapled together. (But a company could use the term for something fancier.) Oh, for me a handout is distributed to a group of people in some kind of teaching or training session, containing some version of the information being present...

I'd call that a leaflet Otherwise, I'm with the general consensus here on brochure vs pamphlet vs tract A...
