Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.

Cool stuff, travis. How does doing all this in a Forth-style environment differ from, say, a more tradtional C-style one, besides the obvious? Is it easier or harder? Etc. It is easier, because I have much closer control over the whole execution and compiling environments, and I can effectively rep...

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.

Some zeptoscript updates: I have written a basic guide to programming in zeptoscript . Note that it assumes at least a basic level of knowledge of programming in Forth. I have added the capability to have "type" classes (not to be confused with Haskell type classes) to enable the creation ...

If you don't agree to getting punched with my left hand, it's your fault when I punch you with my right. Why is not getting punched off the table? Because fuck you, that's why! Ideas of false equivalence like this are why Trump will become God Emperor of America, because people like you won't vote ...

Re: Challenge: American English as a separate language

I should note that I personally sometimes have trouble being understood by other English-speakers, but the big caveat is that they are typically not native English speakers. Native English speakers from elsewhere generally have a better time understanding my accent, even though there are exceptions ...

Anyone who believes that Trump and Biden are equivalent (or who considers not voting for Biden over Gaza) deserves the coming Trump dictatorship that will result from their stupidity.

Re: Challenge: American English as a separate language

To illustrate my point, check out this for example https://youtu.be/xhvkrIcUNy8?si=P2wSyct95TZqDJbT For me it's already a separate language. I am not sure how far 17th or 18th century dialects were from Standard English but I imagine it was pretty far away. Now all you need to do is to somehow 1. M...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

If I may ask, where are the Desolation Islands? I can't say I've ever heard of them before; sorry. They are a barely inhabited French territory on a microcontinent in the southern Indian Ocean. 49 degrees south latitude IIRC. 49 degrees north latitude is the south of France. The area is approximate...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

Apparently Jews are treated better in Iran than in much of the Middle East -- but that is not saying much (considering just how atrociously they are treated in much of the Middle East; IIRC not too long ago Iraq put in place a law mandating the death penalty for ties to the "Zionist Entity&quo...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

The fact that Jews were treated like utter crap throughout the Middle East after the 1947-1948 war despite most of them having no part in said war is a big reason why almost all of them moved to Israel (generally with what they could pack in a suitcase at most), and I have heard nothing that indica...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

according to the wiki, there's fewer than 10k jews in Iran, from something like 50k back before the revolution. Is that indicative of how they are treated now? Jews left for Israel from all over the world, especially unstable places and Middle Eastern countries. The fact that Jews were treated like...

Re: Challenge: American English as a separate language

What historical circumstances could lead to American English developing towards a separate language, at least as different from British English as Afrikaans from Dutch? In our world the high literacy rate of the colonists (aided by the printing press) and constant contact with Britain meant that bo...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

I hear all the neighboring states declared war when Israel was created. Was this because they saw Israel as a crusader state? Was their reaction worse than the opposition faced by, say, Rojava? The official narrative that Arabs/Muslims/poors are irredeemably antisemitic doesn't seem right to me. In...

Re: Resources Thread

I was linked to this impressively accessible grammar of West Greenlandic: https://oqa.dk/assets/aitwg2ED.pdf . It’s a little eccentric in its presentation, but then again West Greenlandic is a little eccentric too, so it works well. From just reading the first few pages this seems much more "f...

On a completely different note, D&D did expand my vocabulary with interesting words like "phylactery" and "thaumaturgist". I just googled "dnd phylactery" and was amazed by how little D&D phylacteries had to do with RL phylacteries... Somehow I am not surprised...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

The second is quite the opposite: I think we expect a lot better from Israel, because, among other things it's a democracy with strong cultural ties to us. I don't know how to compare indignation but I think people feel or felt the same about British and US war crimes. The Iraq War, or the Troubles...
