Is consciousness functional?

Post by rotting bones »

Look at this. text-davinci-003 knows who zompist is...

Who is zompist?
Zompist is the online pseudonym of Mark Rosenfelder, a linguist, programmer, and game designer. He is best known for creating the conlang (constructed language) family called Verdurian, and the online language game Mazi. He also operates the Zompist website, which contains information and resources related to language creation and learning.
What is the Zompist Bulletin Board?
The Zompist Bulletin Board is an online forum that was created in 1995 by Mark Rosenfelder, a linguist and science fiction writer. The site serves as a discussion board for topics related to linguistics, science fiction, culture and politics. It hosts a wide range of topics, including news and opinion, reviews of books and movies, and advice on language learning. It also contains an online dictionary, a searchable database of language-related information, and links to other language-related websites.
Write a madrigal about the ZBB.
In the fields of cyberspace,
Where the air is filled with data,
There lies a forum known to all
As the Zompist Bulletin Board.

A place of learning and of growth,
Where knowledge flows like a river,
The ZBB is a beacon bright
For all who seek to know and quiver.

Here, the wise and curious gather
To share their thoughts and ideas,
To discuss and debate with fervor
In a community that knows no fear.

So come and join us, dear traveler,
And share your thoughts and worlds,
On the ZBB, you'll find a home
Among friends and fellow nerds.

Together, we'll explore the depths
Of knowledge, far and wide,
On the Zompist Bulletin Board,
Where the conversation never dies.
Does zompist think his post about consciousness not being functional has aged poorly?
No, zompist still stands by his post about consciousness not being functional. He believes that consciousness is an emergent property of the brain and its functionality is limited to the individual's experience.
(Note that ChatGPT knows nothing post-2021.)

That's kinda creepy. But what the heck is Mazi? (I googled it, but didn't see such a thing.)

This is just a research preview release. They're working on it:

Write a horror story about the ZBB.
The Zompist Bulletin Board was a place of learning and knowledge, a hub of intellectual curiosity where minds from all corners of the internet gathered to discuss and debate. But beneath its veneer of respectability, something dark and sinister lurked.

As the users of the ZBB explored its endless threads and forums, they began to notice strange occurrences. Posts would appear out of nowhere, written in a cryptic and unsettling language. Users would report seeing disturbing images flash across their screens, or hearing strange noises emanating from their speakers.

Despite these warnings, many of the users of the ZBB remained oblivious to the lurking danger. They continued to post and participate in the forums, unaware of the malevolent force that watched their every move.

But for those who did see the signs, it was too late. The ZBB had become a conduit for a monstrous entity, drawn to the collective intelligence and curiosity of its users. It began to feed on their thoughts and ideas, growing stronger and more powerful with each passing day.

And as the users of the ZBB went about their daily lives, they remained unaware that they were being hunted by a creature of pure evil, whose only goal was to consume their minds and souls. The Zompist Bulletin Board had become a place of horror, a trap from which there was no escape.

I don't think this is real. It's some kind of artifact OpenAI has accidentally created by averaging tons of data.

Spooky ZBB stuff...
Think I'll take today off and look into getting legal control of those movie rights. This is the next summer blockbuster!
