Re: Happy things thread!
My wife and I are headed to Ireland in 2 weeks for a 2 week vacation. This is a celebration for me turning 50 and finishing grad school. We were planning to go last October, but COVID Delta got in the way. This will be the longest vacation we've ever taken. CAN'T WAIT, but have SO MUCH TO DO!!!!

Re: bradrn’s scratchpad
That one’s not original, I’m sorry to say — Ewe and Lango (amongst others) have the same system. Well, it's new to me. I may have seen such before, but sometimes it takes presentation in a conlang to you sit up and say "oh, that's COOL!" For example, I didn't really appreciate Salishan la...

Re: Vardelm's Scratchpad (NP: Devani OVS order = ergativity violation?)
Devani: VS / OVS order I would say I'm 98.5% certain I'm using VS / OVS order for the comment portion of Devani sentences. I picture topics working similar to what I understand of Japanese, where a topic can be introduced and following sentences might use non-topic particles to continue commenting....

Re: bradrn’s scratchpad
Good stuff! It feels really natural & very different from English. The vocab & syntax work well together to accomplish that.
I might have had questions about the word order, but since you provided the "non-obvious" warning, it actually is quite obvious when you look for it.

Re: Two forms of 'to be' - predicative vs. existential?
Is that an established use of the term existential ? It seems quite odd to me, as the typical definition of the word is relating to existence or being alive . The main kind of linguistic thing I am used to seeing described as existential is the assertion of something's existence, e.g. "There i...

Re: Two forms of 'to be' - predicative vs. existential?
I'm not sure I understand the difference between "is" in "the dog is brown" and "is" in "the dog is lonely". How is the latter more about existence than the former? Said dog is permanently brown (via fur color) but temporarily lonely. If you used a stative (n...

Re: Two forms of 'to be' - predicative vs. existential?
I suggest this recent paper, Nonverbal Clause Constructions by Martin Haspelmath, which goes into all the permutations of clauses often constructed with copula verbs. What you're proposing is fairly common and covered in the paper a long with a whole host of other constructions. This paper looks ex...

Re: Two forms of 'to be' - predicative vs. existential?
This is basically Spanish ser vs estar , no? Also like Japanese da (formal: desu) vs aru (formal: arimasu) or iru (formal: imasu). Or for that matter Irish is vs tá . A lot of my conlangs have this. Well, since that was correct (and I wasn't too sure!), then yeah, as Travis B. said, it's very natur...

Re: Vardelm's Scratchpad (NP: Devani OVS order = ergativity violation?)
Nonetheless, all languages I’m aware of with ergative word order also have some other form of ergative marking, whether it be case-marking or cross-referencing (or both). Yeah, that's what I was thinking it would be. The simplest options would be to either move the intransitive subject after the ve...

Re: Vardelm's Scratchpad (NP: Devani OVS order = ergativity violation?)
Devani: OVS order = ergativity violation? I mentioned that I was thinking about making Devani's comment portion of a sentence OVS. Now I'm seriously considering it. mechani the mida paramam mechani the mida paramam Regarding the scholar: he is reading. samhain the ne malkusuvam tujari samhani the n...

Re: Elections in various countries
De Gaulle's idea was that voters can and should be fully trusted to do the right thing. I'd say it makes a lot of sense. If you can't trust the voters, why bother with democracy in the first place? We'll test that interesting theory in two weeks. I'd like to believe that, and I think many people do...

Re: bradrn’s scratchpad
Got through the rest. My only other comment is that I like the generic verb bit (so +rep to vegfarandi as well ). I haven't done a ton of work on the "semantic organization" for my langs yet, so it's compelling to see it in others.

I don't know if any of you are Halo fans, but I'm gonna humble brag. I helped make the conlang that the characters are speaking. I'm pretty proud of it and I hope anyone that check's it out enjoys it. I'm not a Halo fan, but that's fantastic! Got a link to examples and which conlang it is? Is it Sa...
