Arguably "red hair" is red, when you consider that "orange" as a basic color term in English is relatively recent (Wikipedia says the first recorded use of "orange" as a color term was in 1512)

Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread

I don't find reduction of /oʊ̯/ to /ə/ odd, but maybe that's because my /oʊ/ is more like [əʉ̯]~[əɨ̯], i.e. barely rounded to begin with. (My /u/ is also more like [ʉ]~[ɨ], and my /ʊ/ more like [ʉ̞]~[ɨ̞], all tending towards more rounded in the vicinity of labials, but still at best half-rounded. My...

Does the person who made Spanish think they can get away with having /ɣ/ just devoice before front vowels? And how come /θ/ is spelled <z>?

I was getting hired by a hotel to do security. I showed them how easy it was to get into the building, without ever passing a security guard, or even passing thru the lobby. There was a staff entrance about 20 feet down the street from the main entrance, and it was unlocked, at least during business...

I honestly don't find it particularly surprising that so many people have made their own SCA — I made my own[1] because I wanted features or syntax not supported by any of the ones I could find, and it made for an interesting programming project. I like to run words with all their forms thru one at a time, until I see the relevant patterns and I can confidently decide what declension they belong to just by looking at the citation form.

I like to sketch a map out on paper, and then scan it and trace it and edit it in GIMP. I'm much better at making freehand map-looking things with pencil and paper than with a mouse.

For fifth and twelfth I think I have free variation between /fɪf twɛlf/ and /fɪθ twɛlθ/.
Sixth is definitely /sɪksθ/, but realized as something like [sɪkss̪], with a definite shift of my tongue between the two sibilants.
Eighth is /eɪtθ/, realized as /eɪʔθ/.

It occurs to me that the verb usage of "Youtube" with the meaning of watching or searching for a video on Youtube contrasts with the noun "Youtuber", which I've only ever seen used to refer to people who make videos on Youtube.

I was going to suggest uploading the PDF outputs of the project, so that people didn't have to run the Makefile to read them, but then I read in the Issues that you are thinking about overhauling the whole format and process used anyway. Thanks for pointing that out -- I've added the PDFs to the re...
