Re: United States Politics Thread 46

Unfortunately the chances are looking better than I would have thought. For me the most distressing aspect of those polls is how Biden is tanking among young voters. It's not clear how much of this is due to recent factors (e.g. his staunch support of Israel), which could be less important months f...

Re: Elections in various countries

My problem is that I can't find a single popular candidate in the world who will benefit me in any way whatsoever. They're all arguing about whether to kill me slowly or quickly. On the one hand, a slow death means I might live long enough to see a brighter future. On the other hand, with how aggre...

Goddamn it. I spilled my lunch at work. Between the twelve hour shift and my commute, that means thirteen hours with nothing to eat. My breakfast was barely anything as it is because I need to leave for work so early. Is there nowhere nearby where you may buy food? autumn, despite its golden splend...

Re: AIs gunning for our precious freelancers

The link with constructivism and similar epistemological positions, yes, that may be linked to Heidegger among others, despite him being on the wrong side of WW2, as you say. With environmentalism, I'm not so convinced. After all, there are direct links between our relationship with screens and env...

I mostly have similar preferences to those of the blogger but, as far as I'm concerned, voting blank or not voting is generally just letting others vote instead of you and it is better to vote for anyone not awful than not vote or vote blank.

That may help but the version without sarcasm felt realistic anyway, to my pessimistic side and to my feelings of doubt about the worth of the thesis and my skills.

Re: AIs gunning for our precious freelancers

As for Heidegger, I'm a bit surprised... left-wing distrust of tech is usually associated with the whole body of environmental thought and as far as I can see never references Heidegger at all. Or any philosopher in any case. I think this is your lack of experience. New Left thinking generally is s...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread

If your research doesn't immediately produce revenue for the institution, then what use is it, really? Knowledge is more important than money, or at least should be, especially for institutions such as schools and universities whose objectives mainly involve knowledge. Was my sarcasm really so hard...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread

It seems to have degraded similarly in France. I did not realise this before I began my PhD. This is a shame because I think people should be encouraged to learn and research but the reverse seems to be the case. If your research doesn't immediately produce revenue for the institution, then what us...

Welp... Both my grandmothers died within weeks of each other. This wasn't exactly a surprise: both were over ninety, and had severe health problems. One was such a basket case of medical conditions that doctors were surprised she was even alive. But... it still hurts. Now I have no grandparent left...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread

Academicians from what I gather are notoriously underpaid and are always having to chase the next grant, part of why I do not regret not going into academia, even though I probably would have had it not been for factors not under my control. It varies quite a bit from institution to institution. Wh...

Yes, that is what Jean Twenge noticed when she compared the generation Z to previous generations at the same age: That's probably true, but I'm not sure the problem is generational... People my age certainly come across as really anxious and worried too. Yes, the proof is generational but the effec...

I believe it's more than just science fiction. I don't know how you feel about that, but it feels we're in the middle of a huge anxiety epidemic. I'd argue that in an energy-starved world, this is effectively saying, "Let them eat cake!" Let me know if this is not obvious. Which world is energy-starved? Maybe that might apply to India, but certainly not to anywhere else I've been. When I visited family in South Africa earlier this ...

In this discussion, the most important subject missing is the greenest form of energy: none at all. Sobriety is too often forgotten (but less so since the Putin invasion). It obviously is not possible in every circumstance, but in many circumstances we could accomplish tasks without any form of ener...
