Re: River transport in Eretald
@sasasha: My point is not that there is would be no river transport that lets people hop on and off; my point is that it wouldn't have schedules. What would be the need to bind your cargo ships to a schedule, instead of waiting until there is cargo?*) This is only needed from when you have big indus...

Re: River transport in Eretald
Stage coaches had schedules earlier, because they were specific: - They were part of royal / imperial postal systems; that was their original purpose, taking passengers along was a nice earner on top. Government mail was expected to be delivered fast and on a schedule; private mail tagged along - ag...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46
The age argument is of course ridiculous because his main rival is more or less of the same age. Yes and no. I think the problem with that rebuttal is that it emphasises for younger voters just how limited their choices are: Do you want this doddering old white guy or do you want the other dodderin...

Re: River transport in Eretald
zompist may correct me for Verduria, but one other thing to keep in mind is that premodern travel and transport was not nearly as tightly scheduled as we are used to; certainly not on a cargo ship that would take passengers along. You may have had a reasonable expectation plus minus a couple of days...

Re: So - what about crypto currencies?
The Libertarian / Techbro hype on how crypto will get you around governments and fiat money is just that, hype. As long as you need a physical data center to create your cryptocurrency, government just can send a SWAT team and close it down. As usual, the techbros don't understand how much of what t...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
@Ahzoh: that's not how "stative" is normally used... I dunno how they're normally used, I'm pretty sure they're just verbs that involve states, conditions or mental stuff, like red, cold, happy, sick, know, believe, understand, etc. In principle, yes, but "stative" is normally u...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
The only remark I have is that I haven't yet heard of "stative transitive" verbs, as states typically don't involve direct objects. What kind of verbs are these that they warrant a special category? One example from English would be "love", which is normally counted as stative v...

Thanks! Yeah, that's a good reference point. What did you expect to hear, out of interest, and what surprised you? I'd like to make more Dhekhnami pieces, so I'd love to hear. For me, one thing I didn't want to do was make this sound overly ‘evil empire’-ish. Yeah, well, the evil empire vibe was wh...

Just coming across this while catching up. Huxley also had an opinion on how his dystopia stacked up against 1984.

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
What's the origin of -o in Ukrainian words like Dnipro, Petro, Dmytro, Mykhailo etc. ? All other Slavic languages have cognates of these words that end in a consonant (i.e. Dniepr, Pyotr, Dimitriy, Mikhail) Though I don't know the answer to the question, "Дняпро" is, according to Wikipedi...

Re: What do you call ...
Note that even today, although no-one would use formal pronouns with their parents, using them with your in-laws isn't that uncommon (I dodged that bullet as I already knew them in a familar setting before getting involved with their daughter). I don't have German in-laws, but from what I can see a...
