We consume whale products or at least used to, we don't eat them.
We accidentally catch dolphins in nets made for tuna, we don't eat them.
Some countries, including Japan, still hunt and eat whales.

Re: Salvian Thread

Each race in the world of Ajjamah has a Gift inherent to their people, some magic they can do instinctively. I'd be interested to hear about the other Gifts. I'm also interested to know about the "Zombies" on your map. Laws of the land are implanted directly into people's heads using the ...

Re: Phonotactics Help

I'm trying to develop a phonotactic structure to build syllables that, while not English, aren't as strangely alien. What you define as alien is a matter of taste. Nuxalk (a real-world language) has words like clhp’xwlhtlhplhhskwts’ . Looks alien? And yet it's a real word spoken by real people. Whi...

Re: Phonotactics Help

I feel you need to provide more details. What is "somewhat Western" even supposed to mean? With the kind of information you gave, we would have to throw random ideas at you until you decide you like something. Not very efficient. What jumps out at me is that your phonology is very weird. N...

Re: If natlangs were conlangs

Speaking of horrible phonologies, Hixkaryana has the weirdest five vowel system I've ever seen: /æ e ɔ ɯ u/. I get it, you want to be special, but really? This and your language is OVS? You know there's more to conlanging than being weird, right?

Thanks for the explanation. It's incredible how different the Zzyxwqnp text looks in the two romanizations.

This was surprisingly fun to read.

I have one question. How did this romanization come about?:

If this were a natlang, I'd imagine it would quickly die out and leave no legacy. Keep up the good work, though. :)

Re: If natlangs were conlangs

Polish is such a tryhard conlang. I mean - you need over 100 conjugations to fully account for all patterns in the language? Like what? And even when you ignore exceptions is something like 17 conjugations. The author just loves making tables or something. Also: ever heard about analogy? The romaniz...

Re: Rawàng Ata: quick feedback on a couple of diachronic syntax issues?

I'll admit that second post was a tad confusing but I'm also far from an expert. Going one by one, I think the developments from RA-2 to RA-3 make sense. One thing I was wondering reading this: since instrumentals and agentives pattern together in RA-3 (same marking options, and they are the only tw...

The asterisk is used to describe an earlier, historical form, or (sometimes) a theoretically possible but incorrect form.

I use WALS to learn about strategies I might not know about - or simply have forgotten. I also use it to remind myself what topics I need to cover to make a complete conlang.

Re: Stowaway Rats

What would be the benefit for the sailors to kill the rats? It would sure be a lot of work that would not only have a poor return on investment, but would also remove an alarm system from the ship. Seeing rats leave the ship was a surefire way to know you have a leak.

Re: How Not To Conlang?

In short; think carefully about your phonology and the romanization. Make your phonotactics coherent and the transcription plausible yet distinctive. I feel the two things necessary to get that coherent feel are morphophonological processes and diachronic sound change. Both are a lot of work, and f...

I think there's a bug in your S/Z categories: when you take the default set, voiceless stops pattern with voiced fricatives/affricates, and vice versa.

I needed to hear that today. Thanks.
