Re: Random Thread

that is because popular music is weak and easily cowed and thinks listeners will be frightened by hearing both interesting music and interesting vocals at the same time (or at least that's the unkind conclusion I've come to on the matter. I mostly listen to metal, which rarely bothers with such conc...

Re: Venting thread

In my experience, there's a noticeable amount of class prejudice surrounding fast food. You know: the proles insist on eating fast food that makes them fat instead of dining on overpriced Buddha bowls or spending their Sundays batch cooking like normal people. True enough. But I'd say there are lim...

Re: English questions

Isn't it from the Nostalgia Critic? "I remember it so you don't have to." Wikipedia says he started making videos in 2007, but I'm not sure when he started using that catchphrase. (he might have himself been referencing something else, but I when I see the formula from internet users, I al...

Very excited to read more about this. It's quite a unique world and I love reading all the unusual bits! I think about it every now and again so it's neat to see an update!

Re: Random Thread

Honestly, as someone who considers myself pretty "worldly" (in that I greatly enjoy travel, learning about other cultures, etc.), if you asked me to write a list of unique differences between, say, Uruguay and Paraguay, pretty sure I couldn't do it. Intellectually I'm aware there are many,...

Re: Random Thread

I ask this question in part because I want to know the answer (I believe there is a single correct answer, but I could be wrong), but also because I suspect that people will answer this question in certain ways. My first prediction is that no one will choose their own country as one half of a pair ...

Directly with regards to AI creating art... right now, as a person of limited artistic ability and limited access to art supplies, the only way for me to get a custom piece of artwork--with obvious benefits of improving the conditions I live in, holding important personal meaning for myself, etc.--i...

What are you defining as "advanced technology"? Certainly their development of technology would be different from ours, but whether or not they would develop "advanced" technology depends on what that means.

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

To be clear, this is why I mentioned the witness tampering thing. I agree that it is unlikely that he will ever be convicted for anything that occurred while he was president. But the witness tampering happened, like, last week. He's not president anymore, he's a private citizen. Do I think it's lik...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

So far, if they get him on anything, it looks like it'll be witness tampering, which I have to say would be pretty funny. I mean sure I'd like to see him go down for everything else, but to be taken out by his inability to shut his big mouth--I would find a great deal of satisfaction in that.

Unrelatedly, anyone who's not black is "white", whatever that means. Nah, there's a lot of racism against Latin Americans, Asians, and indigenous Americans, too. I've been told that in the context of racism, anyone who's not white is black, and the only historically consistent definition ...

Re: The hornet's nest of grammatical complexity

The second example is actually a good one: "Still I can't agree" should be grammatical and idiomatic for most (North American?) native speakers, as they'd add a small intonation break or pause after "still", i.e. "Still, I can't agree", meaning something similar to &qu...

Re: Predictions for 2301

Personally I think basic technical predictions are easy (it doesn't take a brain surgeon to guess that in 300 years we will probably still be eating food or whatever). The part that's much harder to predict is the social change. It's telling that if I lived in 1743, while many things on zompist's li...

You don't need them to send you a physical piece of paper with a reminder to be able to renew your plates. It will depend on your state, but you likely will either be able to renew your plates online or by going to the local office of whatever agency handles these things (the DMV, I guess? In Michig...

Re: Patriarchy-ectomies in languages

The word "seamster" doesn't feel all that odd to me personally (I think I've heard it before, so saying it has "never been uttered by a living person" is certainly overblown. As far as the "wife" in "midwife" goes, "-wife" is not a productive femini...
