Re: Lexember 2023

As nothing has yet been shared yet about Le Pad Sataw , let us start this Lexember with some introductory remarks. So a week or two ago I woke up from a year long fugue in which I had forgotten my interest in conlanging. But inspiration has come and Lexember seems a nice way to get back into the con...

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.

Using my phone or work laptop to peruse the forums for answers is OK, but the potential solutions mentioned there I have tried. Without success unfortunately. In the past the Mint forum people have been if great help, but then I could easily post what was printed in the terminal online and ask for ...

Re: Lexember 2023: Themes are Up!

So what is the comme il faut here? Lexember entries are posted in this thread, or a new thread is to be made for each language by each participant?

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.

My Linux Mint won't let me browse since updating it to v21. It shows I am connected to my home wifi network, but no browser will load a page. Other networks won't let me browse either. Debugging this is difficult, but my best guess is that it is an issue with the realtek drivers. How to ask for help...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

A few years ago, I was browsing through the Archive of Linguistic Universals and came across an entry with no exceptions (at least, none found so far). The gist was as follows: 'There is no language where grammatical plurality is expressed purely through syntax.' Unfortunately, I can no longer find ...

Re: Lexember 2023

Well, not to use up my ammunition here, nor to out myself as a person with absolutely no knowledge of musical theory, but something like boobap 'vocalizing lively, in a syncopated and improvised style' [ideo].

I've been wanting to do ideophones of jazz for ages now, so it might be about time to break my conlang hiatus.

Books on Austronesian

I have been reorganizing my house, after I realized we have too much junk. Some books I do not need anymore, so in the spirit of Christmas I am giving them away for free. These are: - Proto-Austronesian Phonology with Glossary vol. 1 & 2 (Wolff) - The Austronesian Languages (Blust) - The Austron...

Re: Conlang Random Thread

If you are open to an unconventional, but potentially familiar romanization of /ʔ, ʕ/ you could look into the Arabizi chat alphabet which uses <2> and <3> respectively.

Labialized consonants turn into /w/ with compensatory lengthening:

['βuzi 't͡ɕʰeːwe]
Bhuzi Ch'ehwe
'Bhuzi language'

Was this post generated by GPT, by any chance? Maybe it’s just me, but this seems quite different to your usual writing style.
Do I have a usual writing style? If so, you would probably recognize it by the number of spelling errors and solecisms!

Re: Twin Aster

Hi Man in Space, mister Pogostick, Only yesterday did I start reading this thread. The megalopolis space theme had put me off initially, as such a setting is far removed from my own conworlding habits, but nevertheless I read the entire thread and ended up loving it. First of all, it is very ambitio...

How would your conlang translate "Homo homini lupus"? I am playing with translating some Doctor Zhivago, and that phrase (trans: Человек человеку волк ) is giving me headaches. Most directly: 孰そ者で 誰そ者 危在り。 かそどりで たそどり やびあり。 Kasdori de tasdori yabi ari. [kʰɐ̀s̪.n̥t̪ó̞ᵝˑɾ̪ʲì nd̪è̞ tɐ̞̀s̪.n̥t...

Re: We have no Priests, but we have non-Priests

You describe cultish behavior. Again, I cannot possibly say that no sangha on this earth operates like a cult. It could be true, sure. However, the friends I have who are long time dharma practitioners, and who study with some Rimpoche, all see their teacher like a very dear friend. And like a very ...
