Re: Pronunciations you had to unlearn

Wait, so the conventional pronunciation of the ancient city of Tanis is with /eː/, not with /aː/ or /æ/? And Abydos is /əˈbaidɔs/, not */ˈæbɪdɔs/? Both follow the usual rules for pronouncing classical names in English, TIL that there are usual rules for pronouncing classical names in English. Yeah,...

Re: Innovative Usage Thread

So, something like "the plan was incredulous" wouldn't make sense to you? It's fairly obvious what it's meant to mean, but it's not how I'm used to the word being used, no. I'm not sure I'd know what that's supposed to mean, out of context; "the plan was unbelievable" and "...

Re: Innovative Usage Thread

I hate wholesomism with a passion What on earth is wholesomism? I don't get any decent google hits for it An attitude of wanting everything to be wholesome? Yeah, it's a desire for "wholesomeness" and "healthy lifestyles" and things like that, and in my experience it's always de...

Re: Innovative Usage Thread

Wait, is the standard meaning of incredulous really not "hard to believe"? The meanings I knew, depending on context, were that and as more or less synonymous with "sceptical", except with an additional implication of outlandishness or ridiculousness. Googling sentences l...

Re: Innovative Usage Thread

Maybe, depending on what you mean. They could have plausibly translated it as "This Is An Offensive!" Yeah, that's what I meant. I figured maybe the process was something like the following: 1. Come up with a song title 2. Translate it to English 3. Doesn't sound interesting enough 4. Loo...

Re: Innovative Usage Thread

I just found a North Korean song whose title was translated into English as "This Is Offensive!" It actually means "It's War." Isn't this just a case of assuming that a word is synonymous when it's not? You know, looking up a list of synonyms but the term they chose turned out t...

Re: Price list

You can publish something online without relinquishing the copyright. You do not have to monetize your creation, nor go after infringers, in order to retain copyright. Okay, thanks. The way I thought it works was that while you technically owned copyright by default as soon as you made something, i...

I know this is already a month old so the original issue is probably in the past, but I can't help but reply to it more generally... Wouldn't the more important question be one of artistic integrity? I mean, if you don't like the project where your conlang/conscript/whatever would be used, why woul...

Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread

Hahahaha, so apparently Americans pronounce laughter with /æ/... ...sorry for the most pointless post ever, but I only just found out and I find it absolutely hilarious. Wiktionary claims Americans pronounce laugh with an /æ/ too, but I just don't believe that, at least as a verb...? It can't ...

Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread

I'd have said [sle̞xtɑ] because I thought it's Dutch, but if it's not Dutch... well, if it's actually Šlechta like Pabappa said, then [ʃle̞xtɑ]. Related to the <ch>... this was probably posted in the thread on the old board (I might have posted it myself), but: orchard I keep thinking it should be /...

Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread

I would just complat-out avoid the 1st word because even a correct pronunciation will sound awkward. Its like Oceania. Welp, I'd always thought Oceania was /oʊ̯ʃieɪ̯nɪə/ until now... I guess in that mispronunciation I always thought it had the /eɪ̯/ would be stressed, although I honestly still can'...

1) ascience (and also omniscience ) 2) graveolence 3) gaster 1) /əsaɪ̯əns/ just feels right, but I'm not 100% sure if it's correct. I mean, according to Wiktionary omniscience is /ɒmˈnɪʃəns/ or /ɑmˈnɪʃəns/, which sounds totally wrong and I could swear I've only ever heard it as /ɒmnɪsaɪ̯əns/ and the...

Re: Voynich manuscript deciphered again

Most of the forms in Indo-Aryan languages listed there seem to be Arabic loanwords (via Persian, of course). The words for potato are borrowed from Portuguese. Mmh, so do you think that more or less conclusively means it couldn't be an Indo-Aryan language? It's in his Youtube videos, but the chart ...

Does anyone know where to find or have saved the first pic that's missing from this post about Vogt's phonetics on Bax's site, which seems like it was the "phonetic" values of all letters according to him? Because that'd be one of the most important things for convenience when it comes to ...

He thought Romani formed as a separate language in India centuries before the Roma's ancestors left it? That in itself is already...bizarre. I don't think he thought that? Wait, what? This is the guy's last video on that theory, he made two others before it. Someone on Reddit posted that he'd died and there are obituaries with his name (Derek Vogt), so I guess the theory may no longer be being worked on in spite of its promisingness... :? Re: Voynich manuscript deciphered again

I wasn't even aware of that one! It was just a suggestion what kind of language it could be. Well, even though at least I can't find anything where it's been seriously suggested that it could be related to Etruscan, apparently it has been since this site has a quick mention about the script having ...

Re: Terrible Arabic?

Every time I see Arabic text where the letters aren't joined, especially in big-budget things, I get confused and annoyed to varying degrees. Although the only example I can think of right now is in the film Pitch Perfect 2 , where at the end there's a banner with text in various languages and the A...

Re: Voynich manuscript deciphered again

The claim that it's "Proto-Romance" is even more hilarious than the claim that it's Turkish, since at least Turkish nationalists wanting everything to be Turkish is expected crackpottery. I've had my own ridiculous theories regarding what the Voynich manuscript is (and still have som...
