Re: Pronunciation of Standard English in America (1919)

I was today years old when I realized that for me, I think I approach* [-ʃɪ-] in “associate” the noun and [-sɪ-] in “associate” the verb (plus a reduced vowel in the ultima of the former whilst it’s full in the latter). * I’m not 100% sure what is going on but I perceive some sort of nontrivial diff...

Unmotivated /s/ → /ɬ/ is attested multiple times, although areally not that widespread; Yue Chinese, some Central Tai languages, Hlai, Tanoan apparently. In SE Asia /s/ isn't as stable as it ought to be, it keeps turning into /t/ or /ɬ/ or some bullshit along those lines. edit: MiS's push chain wou...

*ts > *ɬ [ɬɑ' n ʒo:] tsanjô "our language" See this is what I mean by evil sound changes. I’ve actually seen evidence of a dialect of a language (I can’t recall exactly but ISTR it was Sinitic) that had *s > ɬ as a result of a push chain; since we’re only seeing one element of the shift, ...

“We only didn’t see the Louvre” needs no question mark from me—it’s perfectly licit. My takeaway would be that there was some list or set of things you visited on your trip or at least wanted to see, the Louvre being the only one you didn’t get to.
