In any case, social security does not take from the old to give to the young, notably retirement. I argue that a good role of a state: improves the conditions of the citizens and inhabitants, notably the most vulnerable, while encouraging virtue i.e. positive behaviour and discouraging vice i.e. ne...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

Are Americans that interested in socialism? No. Socialism, like welfare, is when you take money from the old and the rich to give it to the young and the poor, which is a ghastly inversion of the true purpose of government: taking money from the young and the poor to give it to the old and the rich...

Re: What are the phonotactics rules for Classical Latin?

My guess is that /s/ (and other fricatives) are common as syllable- (or word-) margins due to their audibility. For /s/, at least, since it involves just the front of the tongue, it’s pretty easy to combine articulatorily with labials or dorsal, at least. An interesting example of fricatives as syl...

Re: English questions

Bilabially trilled coronal affricates (advibrates?) are found fairly frequently in Sino-Tibetan too; some language (can't remember which, Nort would know) has synchronic /ⁿdə/ → [ⁿdʙv̩]. Wikipedia says Namuyi has a full set of bilabially trilled affricates /pʙ bʙ tʙ dʙ/ but it's unsourced (well it'...

Re: What are the phonotactics rules for Classical Latin?

I would be remiss not to mention Piotr Gąsiorowski's paper and its analysis of English in particular and the Indo-European family more generally (including Latin) including a series of "presigmatised stops" (which give the paper its name: "SPecial STatus: Presigmatised Stops"). ...

Can /æt/ take initial glottal stop? It can't for me, and it varies with [ð̞æt] with a [ð̞] that's barely there.

On the question of polls, you could ask people "Are you responding to this poll right now, yes or no?" and the nos would not dip below ten percent. People always assume the floor is zero for poll responses, but it never is. 4% all neither uncommon opinions in conservative circles nor inco...
